If it costs Australia $340 million to prepare and participate for the 2016 Olympic
Games, at which we were an abject failure..Im interested to know how much it cost
world wide for each and every nation to participate...
I recollect hearing John Coates mentioning that it cost us $800 million...dunno what figure
is correct $340m or $800m..but he did go on to say that it cost the USA a billion dollars
for their team. We sent 420 athletes..one of the largest contingents, and our gold
medals were three from the pool and the other 5 from obscure sports such as trap shooting
    and single skulls...what a junket...
These 420 athletes together with their leeches that travel with them should be ashamed
    of their athletic efforts..
The Olympics is a world wide junket for all concerned in a world economy where the
money could be better spent on hospitals etc...
But of course, we are a proud sporting nation, and have to prove we can mix it with the
    best...or so it seems...
Imagine how much public housing could be built to house the poor world wide if this
charade was abandoned...maybe then we might be able to afford the 12000
refugees that we are supposed to take according to our masters...the UN....
And the USA mens basketball team rents a yacht because the athletes village
is not good enough....gimme a break...
Im sure everyone in Rio had a good time....ask Omran about the Olympics...

I have no problem with the money we spend on the Olympics. It provides one of the few opportunities where all countries can come together in an environment of peace and unity.

We already spend millions of dollars on refugees. On having to have a Middle Eastern Crime Squad, on initiating de-radicalisation programs in our schools, on welfare, housing etc etc etc.

NSW is only supposed to get a portion of these refugees yet Mike Baird in his 'wisdom' has allocated $146 million of this year's budget just to house Sydney's share. Homeless children are only getting $40 million. There is absolutely no balance there and this I do have a problem with.

Sorry, I didn't even know the Olympics was on. I stopped being interested in the Olympics back in the late 80's when I became an intelligent adult and realised it was all a ruse.

I feel sorry for anyone who wastes their time watching that junk - they must have really boring lives. :frown:

I enjoyed watching the Olympics.. (not that I'm glued to the set, watched perhaps 1 hour a day)
however I agree, the money could have been better utilised in view of the suffering in Syria and even the slums of Rio itself.

The Olympics to me has a "spoilt brat" or "Marie Antoinette" (who had a fairytale village built for herself while people starve) stench to it.

I dont watch the Olympics either, but I agree with Magoo, and I do think the economy of the nations of the world
suggests that the Olympics should at least be scaled back.
I suppose all the athletes had a good time, got drunk, got laid, but didnt win any medals,
but can jokingly laugh about the biggest choke in Olympic history, or wriggle their arse
    instead of jumping hurdles.

The French walker who took a dump during the walk also has a stench.

NBC paid over $1.2B to cover the games, so it should all be paid for.

Its had that stench for decades. Hard to fathom there are so many mindless zombies who still believe those "big kids" go to the Olympics representing their countries, and not their own personal financial interests. :roflol:

I suppose the viewers have fun watching adults playing kiddies games at a world wide spots carnival.

It's probably the only world event that brings people from all nations together. Everybody has a chance to showcase their country and talent but importantly it is about personal expression and the other qualities that demonstrate hard work and aspiration. Most people love the spectacle and will pay lots of money to see the best of the best compete for the crown of worlds best...Its entertainment and it's the feel good element plus the education. I knew little about Brazil until now, the good the bad and the interesting history.

If we are talking about wasting money just look at the $20 billion spent on gambling every year. The funds spent on the Olympics pales into insignificant in comparison but yet the human spirit is on display.

We spend trillions on war, why not spend on something that unites for a moment.

The athletes go for their own self-fulfilment (nowt wrong with that if it's what turns them on! 'One man's meat is another man's poison' as they say?), and the spectators go to make lots and lots of noise. Some people just need to make noise - although I can't for the life of me think what they're actually saying - or shouting - which constitutes that noise? Anyone? [IMG]

If you really want to attack sport, attack the ones that aren't sport, like boxing and horseracing.

We did it to save the poor dogs in NSW, now let's look at the horses. Kwr'a aww ud U fwr gun ri vurw?

And all team sport, too - I always understood the Olympics was predominantly about individual achievement.

Honestly, Olympics should be all about rhythmic gymnastics. We do not need to see anything else and Winter editions would be fine with just figure skating.

Joke aside, Although I do consider figure skating and rhythmic gymnastic to be very beautiful form of art (not only because of the participants) I, pretty much, never watch them and my interest for individual sports is rather low. In fact the only sport I enjoy is football/soccer.
