Well - more like a Palestinian girl bravely confronting an IDF soldier.

Everything is inverted in this sad, wrenching photograph by AP’s Majdi Mohammed, taken November 2. Inverted, because it is not possible to know whether the small, brazen, bold, desperate fist, held fearlessly and on the brink of mortal threat by the daughter of the Palestinian activist Nariman Tamimi, marks the moment in which a freedom fighter is forged and steeled, or the moment in which this girl is vanquished.

Is this a trigger moment in her life, generating the self-image of a person who stands up for what she believes in, even in the face of an army? Or is it a moment of incalculable self-risk such as should not be foisted on children, and which deprives adults of their role as protectors?

Is it to her benefit to struggle like everyone else, or more than others, her bravery living up to her mother’s standards? Or is it dangerous and reckless, an attempt to twist reality, to approach the soldier and raise a fist at him? To position herself opposite this young, bespectacled soldier, whose face is freckled and blotched with red and not in attack mode, to confront him below his outstretched arm?

The girl has thick, lovely yellow hair; a toy-like truck with a yellow tarpaulin is parked, down the road; and the fallow field is November-yellow. The yellow is almost too yellow. A camera dangles from the neck of a Palestinian next to the truck, watching the event unfold.

The girl wears the same top she wore on August 24, when her mother was arrested before her eyes and the soldiers split into two groups, one holding her and her cousin, the others seizing her mother. There were plenty of photographers there that day.

As a soldier held her with her arms pulled behind her back, she threw her head spasmodically from side to side and forward and back in urgent despair and with piteous, infantile crying, shouting and begging for her mother; until, finally, another soldier, unnerved by the wailing, which apparently set an inner clock within him ticking, shouted, “Hey, load the mother already” - though more as a way of trying to speed things up than deliberately choosing a verb inappropriate for human beings. After the door of the Jeep in which her mother was “loaded” had closed, the girl broke loose and ran down the road and kept running, and did not stop running.

For more than three years the residents of Nabi Saleh, a West Bank village near Ramallah, have been protesting, with processions and demonstrations, against the takeover of their well and land by the Halamish settlement. For more than three years the army and the military-justice authorities have been occupied in suppressing the protest and punishing the protesters under military law. But in August, when her mother was arrested, the golden-haired girl from the Tamimi family drew media attention when she was photographed by Oren Ziv ‏(Activestills‏) as soldiers held her. The image, which was posted on the Facebook page “We are all against the extreme left,” spawned ugly responses from those who hate Arabs and who hate people. At first they thought she was not an Arab because of her blonde hair, but even when they thought she was a despicable leftist worthy only of contempt, they could see she was only a little girl. This did not stop them from urging monstrous tortures to liquidate her, and there are no reports to suggest that any of them, including women who wished her similar miseries, were arrested for making threats.

Two months later, the demonstrations are continuing - because they cannot end until there is an agreement and the settlements are evacuated - and a Palestinian photographer now captures her determined back and raised arm. As such, he focuses on the symbolic aspect of her action, which fills the space between her clenched fist and the soldier’s outstretched arm. Because she is not crying here, is not passive, a complexity arises - notably in comparison to the images of masked, stone-throwing youths who appear time and again in photographs taken by Israelis in the territories.

This is a disturbing image, because she is a girl, only a girl. It is an interesting image, morally complex, and also a beautiful one, because her head is lovely and the soldier is intriguing. Above all, it poses an ongoing question: How can it be that such a little girl stands at such close range to a soldier, and can we feel calm about it, even when it is clear that he is not hitting her? Will calm ever be an option?

And then lines leap to mind whose message had always seemed extraordinarily pertinent - lines written by Israel’s unofficial poet laureate, Yehuda Amichai, in memory of his commander in the 1948 War of Independence, who was killed in a Gazan village - but whose message now, in the case of the girl from the Tamimi family, seems to be nullified. Will it ever be possible to read them to her and to the soldier? Do not forget, Amichai wrote ‏(in the translation by Barbara and Benjamin Harshav‏), “Even a fist was once an open palm with fingers.”

    Beautiful !!

and when that zionist regime is gone this photo will be on walls in galleries all over the world with the rest of them showing what a huge mistake Britain made in world history by supporting these zionist thugs.

God bless and protect that child and her family from these monsters so they live to see the end of them and their filthy racist apartheid killing regime.

Some British politicians did of course support (went along with ) Zionists demands , coz we didnt want any more Jews , however , we had other more urgent economic problems to overcome at that that time.

    (wink)

American Jews support Israel. Maybe that's reason enough for American conservatives to withhold their support of Israel.

    Aye.

When they turned on us, and invented 20th century terror tactics, we should not have hung just a few of their leaders.

    But all of them.

Then the rest of the Jews could have gone back to Poland, Russia and Germany, where they belonged, as per what Helen Thomas rightly said.

Read that link I give you before, Albert.

They mostly care about the US economy, and are feeling less of connect with Israel.

Indeed. Now zoom out and see how the Palestinians send their children to provoke violent soldier reactions.
And how the soldiers contain them. I wonder what would happen to a Syrian kid trying to provoke a Syrian soldier like that.
Well, we know what happen , dont we ?

I had a look at your little video, it is in the west bank supposedly and they are complaining about illegal Israel settlers stealing more of their land but I guess you support theft as well.

No, but show me an Arab state when a kid can behave like that near a soldier.
Israel is the best place for Arabs 1000 miles around.

They had just beat up her 16 year old brother and arrested him.

    This from Ynet Israel news.

After spitting at him, she continued shouting: "I spit in your face. Go watch your mother instead of fighting little children. You're a traitor. You kill people to get money from dogs."

Abir Kubati, spokesperson of the popular protest coordination committee, said: "I don't understand what the army wants – they send soldiers into a Palestinian village and then dare to depict themselves as victims because the residents don't welcome them.

"This specific video shows a girl whose brother was detained by the soldiers, very violently, only minutes before and that's why she was upset.

"The brother, by the way, is 16, a minor, and he was released by the Military Court because his rights were violated and he was beaten by the soldiers," she said.

I look at the video and I dont see that.
I see a few organized children provoking and an army of photographers (or should I say pornographers) try to get the picture of the sodier hitting them back.
    Only the soldiers did not.

I dont come here to defend everything Israel does. But this specific picture posted here is a graphic lie.
Obe that the Palestnians are so good at.
It was not smart of the poster to publish it cause it only exposes the fabrication of "violand Israelis".

So you do not believe that Israeli news is telling the truth about what happened? These Israelis soldiers came on to Palestinian land and arrested a 16 year old kid and then beat him up and arrested him, that girl in the video is his sister complaining. The IDF beat up Palestinian kids all the time, they arrest them and lock them up without reason and they do not get to see a lawyer either, there are videos on youtube of ex IDF soldiers stating what they did to Palestinian kids. There is also a website called Breaking the Silence that has many IDF soldiers giving testimony about what they did to the kids.

    http://www.breakingthesilence.org.il/

You should try and educate yourself.

I'm familiar with breaking the silence. They are a bunch of brave people and they are Israeli soldiers.
This is indeed a great example not of the wrong doings, because wrongdoings can be found all over, but of trying to be better humans despite the situation.

Now had there been some way to settle the Israeli-Palestinian distpute so both sides will be happy, I would support it with all my heart.
Alas, from the Palestinian side I meet only people who say, their goal is to eradicate the Jews.
This is the goal of Hamas, read its charter.
With those people, there is nothing I can talk about and I will protect myself and my children from them.

What an absolute load of crap. Spewing up zionist BS is not going to prove anything here. Hamas Charter, the only people who bring that up are pro Israeli fools who read it on some dumb website. What they do not know because they cannot be bothered to do any research is that the charter for one is 25 years old and is not even used by Hamas anymore and has not been used since at least 2005 when they published their election manifesto which sets forth their aims. Members of Hamas have stated in public that they accept Israel within the 1967 borders. Your claims that the only Palestinians you have met goal is to eradicate Jews is a fantasy. I just have you down as another zionist now.

So the Hamas charter is a zionist crap.
That is an interesting idea. When did you think the Zionist planted their agent to write the charter for Hamas ?
Do you think the whole Hamas leadership is a zionist plot ?

Dont understand me wrong. I too think that the Hamas charter is crap, only it is Palestinian crap not zioinist one.

Run along zionist I am sure you have more BS to spread. See you give yourself away very quickly. You ignored the actual story about the girls brother being beaten and arrested by the IDF but you made a big deal about the video showing the girl screaming at IDF soldiers, you could not be bothered to do any research at all to see what was actually happening and then you came out with the usual zionst BS about the Hamas charter, a charter that they have not even used for years since their election manifesto but you churn it out again and again like a zionist robot. Your posts should not be taken seriously as it is clear they have not got a clue about what the IDF do, they are just an apology for IDF actions while slagging off Palestinians.

I've realized that the two-state solution is no solution, the one-state solution is no solution. The only solution is the Helen Thomas solution. The Zionists will never voluntarily make peace so they have to be coerced into it. Send the bastards back to their homelands.

No, but it's used as a Zionist false propaganda weapon since the charter is an irrelevant 24 year old document.
