If Nixon weren't A: As paranoid and B: As corrupt as he ended up being, I think he could've been an all-time great US President. His policy of Detente IMO was the height of US Foreign Policy, and he's the first person who wanted a Living Wage passed through Congress.

He was the classic tragedy hero.
In his case a deep inferiority complex over not being a rich kid.
He was most concerned about acquiring wealth and was probably corrupt by the time of the Checkers Speech. And Pat's good Republican cloth coat.

Pat Buchanan is a real conservative who sticks to his principles. He supported Trump based on the promise of putting America first. Trump broke that promise, and he did so in spectacular fashion by attacking a sovereign nation without a legitimate reason or congressional sanction. In other words, Trump has become the establishment's puppet.

At least Buchanan has the integrity to admit he was wrong.

Trump has surrendered to the establishment. His unconstitutional attack on Syria proves that.

Why are you surprised? Trump's platform was very similar to what Buchanan wanted for America: Foreign policy realism and economic nationalism.

In any case, Buchanan shows that he has integrity by sticking to his principles. Unlike many Trump supporters, Buchanan isn't making lame excuses for Trump's radical departure from his campaign rhetoric.

What's really disturbing is that this is getting to be accepted as somehow "normal" behavior.

The idiot Bush Jr. had no reason to attacked Iraq, so he twisted intelligence to suit his purposes, and LIED to every American while looking them in the eye. What a turd. Then, he gets a hair up his ass, leaves Iraq, and invades Afghanistan. Both unnecessary wars.

And now we have the Orange Doosh in office and he's bombing countries as if he's playing a freaking video game. We seem to be electing one crackpot after another. During the last GOP primary, they had a stage-full of crackpots. Where are they finding all these barfbags?

Imagine all the trillions wasted on these wars. If we spent that money here at home we could make this country new again. New roads, bridges, you name it.

Yes, I will give Herr Bundkannon credit for admitting that he was srong about Trump.

Now what does he intend to do about it?

when I looked at most of Trump's domestic and foreign policy agenda, it was very similar to what Buchanan ran on as a republican, and my guess is that if you look at who voted for Buchanan in his primary run, they were largely blue collar men, not dissimilar from a large strain of Trump's devotees. The real differences I saw was that Buchanan was much more skeptical of our Israeli alliance, and he was a devout catholic meaning he was more strongly anti-gay rights, and pro-life.

I see this article of Pat's as still rather muted, compared to his usual. he still wants to walk on both sides of the Trump river.

Nixon dragged on the Vietnam war for 6 years after campaigning on a "secret plan to end the war". My brother was killed over there in 1973. Other than that, I think Dick Nixon was a pretty good president who really loved his country and tried his best to lead us in the right direction.

I never liked Buchanan because of his religiosity.. I always felt he was playing it.. But, this is a new low.. Buchanan is a grown man.. How is it he didn't see what Trump is BEFORE the election?

Probably because what Trump was spewing resonated with Herr Bundkannon's inner racist fascist.

To surrender means that you were at war with that party. Trump was always in cahoots with the establishment but knew that to get elected he had to lie.

Don't forget Obama. He was bombing at least seven predominately Muslim countries by the time he left office. And he told the whole world that he did not require congressional authorization to strike Assad's forces. Thankfully, he did not go through with it. I will always give him credit for that, at least.

Anyway, my point is that the military-industrial complex pulls the strings regardless of who is president. The last president who challenged the military-industrial complex in a meaningful way was JFK and we all saw what happened to him.

Buchanan isn't a racist or a fascist. He's a traditional conservative and an American nationalist. That there may be some overlap between various strains of nationalism and fascism is incidental.

If that were true, then the establishment wouldn't have tried to destroy him at every opportunity.

You're right, perhaps the word "cahoots" was not the right word to use. I should have wrote that he always wanted to be part of the establishment but knew that he would never have won the primaries on that basis.

I would tend to agree with that. He wants their approbation and he sold out his working class base in order to get it.
