May Day is coming up, which used to be a day of celebration in the Soviet Union with an impressive show of weapons and infinitely long parade of soldiers. Perhaps, then, it would be appropriate to pay special attention on this day to the human cost of communism in this symbolic home of Marxism, and worldwide. This blog is on Stalin and the Soviet Union.

By far, the consensus figure for those that Joseph Stalin murdered when he ruled the Soviet Union is 20,000,000. You probably have come across this many times. Just to see how numerous this total is, look up Stalin and 20 million in Google, and you will get 183,000 links. Not all settle just on the 20,000,000. Some links will make this the upper and some the lower limit in a range. Yet, virtually no one who uses this estimate has gone to the source, for if they did and knew something about Soviet history, they would realize that the 20,000,000 is a gross under estimate of what is likely the Stalin's true human toll.

The figure comes from the book by Robert Conquest, The Great Terror: Stalins Purge of the Thirties (Macmillan 196. In his appendix on casualty figures, he reviews a number of estimates of those that were killed under Stalin, and calculates that the number of executions 1936 to 1938 was probably about 1,000,000; that from 1936 to 1950 about 12,000,000 died in the camps; and 3,500,000 died in the 1930-1936 collectivization. Overall, he concludes:

Thus we get a figure of 20 million dead, which is almost certainly too low and might require an increase of 50 percent or so, as the debit balance of the Stalin regime for twenty-three years.

In all the times I've seen Conquests 20,000,000 reported, not once do I recall seeing his qualification attached to it.

Considering that Stalin died in 1953, note what Conquest did not include -- camp deaths after 1950, and before 1936; executions 1939-53; the vast deportation of the people of captive nations into the camps, and their deaths 1939-1953; the massive deportation within the Soviet Union of minorities 1941-1944; and their deaths; and those the Soviet Red Army and secret police executed throughout Eastern Europe after their conquest during 1944-1945 is omitted. Moreover, omitted is the deadly Ukrainian famine Stalin purposely imposed on the region and that killed 5 million in 1932-1934. So, Conquests estimates are spotty and incomplete.

I did a comprehensive overview of available estimates, including those by Conquest, and wrote a book, Lethal Politics, on Soviet democide to provide understanding and context for my figures. I calculate that the Communist regime, 1917-1987, murdered about 62,000,000 people, around 55,000,000 of them citizens (see Table 1.1 for a periodization of the deaths).

As for Stalin, when the holes in Conquests estimates are filled in, I calculate that Stalin murdered about 43,000,000 citizens and foreigners, over twice Conquests total. Therefore, the usual estimate of 20 million killed in Soviet democide is far off for the Soviet Union per se, and even less than half of the total Stalin alone murdered.

It is not true. If we talk specifically about Ukraine. Ukraine has not only left all the grain, which could collect in the territory of Ukraine, but even received an additional grain from Russia. For example from the Volga region. (the Volga region - That's where there was a real terrible famine).

The Polish newspaper "Novy Chas", "On Hutsulia number of hungry households reached 88.6% in 1932 ...."

Lviv newspaper reported that in the Carpathian population of Western Ukraine live in terrible poverty. In Kalush province have villages where hunger dying out entire families. After the ban by the Polish government to engage woody, in bad year hutsuly had no means of subsistence. The government is no famine relief is not provided. People died out families.

Jozef Stalin was the first Secretary of the Communist Party from 1922 – 1953. After Lenin’s death in 1924, he became the leader of the Soviet Union. Stalin didn’t take long in launching a new economy that screwed up food production across the country so bad it caused massive famine. Breakdown: Policy reforms like the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.

Mao Zedong was a Chinese revolutionary, political theorist, and communist leader who led the People’s Republic of China. Mao, while controversial, is still widely considered a savior of the nation. I did a semester abroad in China in 2001 after falling in love with its history, and was surprised in my conversations that many people thought Mao had done 70% – 80% good things. During his first five years from 1949 – 53 he is said to have systematically killed between 4 to 6 million people by sentencing them to die or by sending them to “reform through labor” camps. He organized mass repressions, established execution quotas, and defended his actions in these early years as necessary for securing power for “The People’s Republic of China”.

His social programs the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution are two of the most ill-fated, poorly named, initiatives ever. The first was an effort to rapidly industrialize China. His focus was on making China a premier exporter of steel, and to this end he asked everybody to make it. The problem was it got many citizens to make smelting shops in their backyards. Not only was the steel of little value, but it was made from everything lying around the house including their own cooking supplies! Without the tools to make food, no money coming in from the steel, and no money to survive ~ a lot of people starved to death. The estimates on this program alone are 20 million deaths! Think about that number. Really think about it. Then ask yourself… why would you EVER let someone back into power after such an insanely bad decision.Well, they took the reigns away from him for a short time.

In the interim Mao started the socialist education movement. He aimed the concept at young ones who would eventually wrest the power away from the older guard. By 1964 this movement was renamed the “four cleanups movement” whose goal was cleansing politics, economics, ideas, and organization of “reactionaries”. This led to the formation of the “Red Guards” who were organized to punish intellectuals and take out Mao’s political adversaries. The Cultural Revolution was now underway, and its overriding mission was to abolish: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas. Something Mao fervently believed in was that destruction and chaos could bring re-birth. So he told his followers to destroy buildings, sacred objects, talk back to ones elders, punish them, turn them in, and kill those who did not agree. By 1968 things were starting to look pretty good for Mao all over again, and so he put into place the decade long “Down to the Countryside Movement” which forced young intellectuals to move out to the country to become farmers. Sadly, the people he pushed out there were the same Red Guards who had helped him get power. Estimates of the death toll are between 40,000 – 7 million depending on who you ask.

Finally, there is the 100 flowers movement which just needs an abbreviated mention here. Mao asked people to come forth and tell him how he should govern China. Intellectuals and liberals bit at the chance to tell him what they really thought, and were encouraged by the Communist party to do so. Then in a sudden change of heart, or an incredibly crafty mission to out his haters, the government persecuted 500,000 of them who were considered to be “dangerous thinkers”.

Mao is essentially like that girlfriend/boyfriend who keeps on taking a (*)(*)(*)(*) on you, but is so damn charming you hardly notice. His policies and political purges from 1949 to 1976 caused the deaths of 49 to 78 million people.

The boomers allowed this republic to become an oligarchy, ruled over by the robber barons that FDR put controls on, while Reagan and every president and congress since 1981 unleased these sociopaths upon the average American, which sent 60 percent of the wealth of the middle straight to the robber barons. The same sort of paradigm that existed before FDR cut their nut sacks off and refused to allow them to write economic policy that would hurt working people as it only benefitted the robber barons. Once these robber barons had to accept a reasonable profit, instead maxing out their own profits and wealth, we saw the creation of history's largest middle class. But now they have been unleashed, these men who have no allegiance to any nation, and their only god is money. The economic model they bought from our politicians, has not expanded our middle class, it has hurt it. Their economic model, globalization to max out their profits by slave labor and stagnating our wages, when prices rise, has not created the American dream, quite the contrary, it is killing it. Look at the millennials.

I think we all need to get ready for what robotics will do to capitalism. It will implode it, which is ironic in a cosmic level. In order to increase profits and robber baron wealth to the absolute max, robots who earn no wage, require no insurance, will replace much of the work force. Except robots do not need nor can they buy what the human workers buys and uses. So, the elites are missing one important element in capitalism. Consumers. IN order to consume requires disposable income. But there are no jobs that pay a disposable income, or at least not many of them in that future brave new world. If 20 percent of a working population are the only ones with job which provide income, where will the income to buy what the robots make, for the other 80 percent? LOL

I think the haters of socialism might need to get an early start on accepting it. For robotics plus capitalism destroys capitalism.

When coming up with the numbers of civilians who have been murdered by their own government, communist regimes have murdered 100 million of their own citizens.

You do not count soldiers who are killed on the battlefield or civilians who are caught in the cross fire. You count the number of civilians who have been murdered by their own government.
