This page says it was the Latin word used to translate a Hebrew word in Isaiah in the Vulgate, that word meaning morning star, Venus, bringer of light (there seems to have been some attached mythology that the planet Venus brought the sun up).

Note how mythology is so closely tied in with astrology. This is how it was in the ancient world. People essentially worshiped the sky, invented myriad stories about the things they saw up there.

All quite illogical, isn't it? I've never understood why the translation always switches the word order around, i.e. Greek says "The Word was with God, and God was the Word" while the translation says "The Word was with God, and the Word was God."
