Because the Hebrew Israelites only believed in ONE god. Therefore those that kept the faith would not be corrupted by all of the other gods and myths and as such would have maintained a consistent belief system. This belief transforms into history as much as it is maligned, I mean really, whose history is not maligned by someone? I believe the bible is as good account of history as anyone elses at the time, that is why it has become so widely read. Attack this history as you would anybody elses I would hope!

Well those who did not follow the commandments were destined to fall into the pagan ways of believing a history that has continually changed and been re written according to those who disposed of them BUT the Israelite history remained with the commandment keepers throughout millenia through the scriptures and through all means which is why we still have the bible and we don't have egyptian or summerian scripture to such an extent. This is simple not true. The archeological evidence states that the Jews had many Gods. Excavations in their houses have revealed statues of Canaanite Gods. It was not until about 200 BC that they really became believers in one God and then not all of them either.
The general idea though is that if they worshipped other gods other than yhwh then they would go into exile and they did, because they worshipped false gods and idols.
