Not long ago, the Pope and Abbas have met in the Vatican and according to the BBC, NYTimes and so on, the Pope allgedly called Abu Manen "an angel of peace". The problem here that the Pope has never called him that in that meeting. The Pope simply said to him: "may you be an angel of peace", according to the Italian newspeper "La Stampa":
Also according to Spamish agancies and the Vatican website itself, it qouted as such:
And yet, worldwide media has the odesity to misqoute the Pope, and to wrote that he called Abbas "an angel of peace", which was never happened.
Just to make the record straight.

I read that also.. good to know the Pope can recognize a terrorist and "hopes" he can change his stripes... Abbas is sworn terrorist with ties to the 1972 massacre of Israeli Olympic athletes....he is known terrorist and all facts point to his disgusting vile path of bloodshed of innocent people being killed over being Jewish..

The problem is that the Pope has never said such a thing. The Pope simply said "may you be an angel of peace.".

And still people think that he is the right man for the job.

no..what Im saying is that how is how Abbas will spin this.. Abbas lied and immediatly said the "the pope called him an angel of peace"... hence Abbas is trying to paint that "killing Jews is ok by the Pope, as he think Im an angel of peace"...when the Pope never said that..
Abbas is a wicked duplicitous killer and terrorist..and thats how he operates..

Sorry, but why would anyone who supports Abbas or his politics be swayed by what the Pope says about Abbas and where is Abbas trying to paint "killing Jews is ok by the pope, as he thinks I'm the angel of peace". Where is Abbas trying to spin it - bit pointless in his own country. So, my original question stands - Does anyone really care? - other than those who are against Abbas

again.. yes it matters.. as Abbas has not held election and is a dictator.. so its in his best interest to spin this that "see..The Pope endorses my plan on terrorism" to his violent masses and his opposition..
    this is how dictators work..
do you read the Israeli. Pali, ME Papers?

It needs to care becuase what was published in the mainstream media about what the Pope told Abbas, is a distortion of what the Pope really said to him.

many people in the world is taking serious what the Pope says, ,and when the Pope is been misqouted, then his followers can think somthing that isnt true. Then it needs to be fixed, which of course that is the point of this thread, to make the recotd straight over Pope's comments on Abu Mazen.

if the Pope was misquoted, why did he apologize?

    - - - Updated - - -

the Pope did say it, and he apologized for offending anyone

    - - - Updated - - -

this is false, Abbas never said such a thing and you have no evidence that he did.

    you're just slandering Abbas

That is my point. Anyone who reads those papers will not be swayed by what the Pope says about Abbass with regard to their opinions of Abbass. To test this, can you name one person who now thinks, "Oh, Abbass is not as bad as I thought". It wont get him a higher or lower approval rating in The West bank or Gaza because of what the Pope said or didn't say.

I feel that what some are actually upset about is not what the Pope may have said but the actual recognition by the Pope of Abbass as a leader of a country/region. Clearly the actual meeting between the Pope and Abbass is the crux.

Pope Francis meant no offense to Israel by referring to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as being "an angel of peace" and intended to encourage harmony between the two sides, the Vatican said on Tuesday.

the Israeli news source must be lying. ;)

Apparently, someone or some group wants to make an issue of this innocuous incident. There are a whole group of Catholic conservatives who out-rightly oppose Francis. (The Republican Party's war with Pope Francis has finally started) His social view run contrary to their core beliefs.

The pope, according to the ynet article, was speaking colloquially, to wit:

"Lombardi said the pope explains the significance of the medal to heads of state who receive it,
and that the word "angel" in this context means "messenger"."

You don't say. There I was thinking that the Pope thought that Abbas was actually a real angel!

I presume you know that angels are supposed to be messengers from god so that explanation does not alter the facts and the words messenger and angel are interchangeable?
