Prince's raciest and most provocative songs are among my favorites which included one you mentioned...
"Darling Nikki" from the Purple Rain album and "International Lover" from 1999 album. Only Prince could write produce and perform those songs with the theatrics and musical panache that he alone possessed.

Man, I saw that earlier...tears came in a flood. What I wouldnt give to have seen one of his shows. Tragic loss is an understatement from this 80s girl.

*******n I love a thread where the left/right paradigm is shed to be human.

Why is it always surrounding death?

I love you Utopian (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)bags today. Can we find some common ground on anything other than what we find tragic? Must the pendulum swing to this extreme to explore our humanity? This (*)(*)(*)(*)ing dead midget equalizes us through raw funky sexmusic... but we cannot have a legitimate discussion on the future of our country, our lives, and our children? Prince? Really? *******n he was good.

    Agreed.

Sad to see him go, but it's a little sad that only when tragedy strikes do we show any shred of unity.

    RIP Prince.

I think we all agree Prince was great, and his death is sad, but if we all got along on a political forum, it would be pretty weird, and a little dull.

I dunno, maybe that's just me.

I heard Prince was given an opiate-blocking treatment a few days earlier.

Multiple sources in Moline tell us, Prince was rushed to a hospital and doctors gave him a "save shot" ... typically administered to counteract the effects of an opiate.

Our sources further say doctors advised Prince to stay in the hospital for 24 hours. His people demanded a private room, and when they were told that wasn't possible ... Prince and co. decided to bail. The singer was released 3 hours after arriving and flew home.

We're told when Prince left he "was not doing well."

We know authorities in Minnesota are trying to get the hospital records from Moline to help determine cause of death.

We have made more than a dozen attempts to reach Prince's reps for comment, but they went radio silent.

Man that sucks. What a great talent he was. I used to dislike his music but I grew to like it and him. Very sad.

Flu = opiates it seems. Not a big fan either but I respected his talent. I was more distraught when Lemmy went in December. Hey if you want to live a hard life I can respect that, but there are consequences. Not sure about Prince, a lot of celebs went out on drugs before him and the autopsy hasn't been done yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the cause. R.I.P.

I will agree with you that I did base my quip about his lack of talent based upon my dislike of his persona, the one and only song that I knew he did ( purple rain) which I considered stop and childish. All I recall of that song was the constant repetition of two words --purple and rain. My first exposure to the guy was when he came to our state and the media interviewed a couple woman fans who spoke as if that could be challenged intellectually by a semi educated summer squash. I decided right there and then that he must be useless if those two gaboomkas were his fan base. I ignored him fro that point on and relegated him to the Michael jackson level.

There re a lot of people who I consider as having talent because my taste in music runs from jazz to rock ( older rock) folk at one time.

He was an ass because he owned and protected his songs? I am not thinking he is the ass here...

Too bad...because if you would have watched the movie of the same name, which was my first exposure to Prince, you probably would have seen and agreed early on what a musical genius he was. I was so taken with his talent that I stayed in the theater to watch the film for the second time. Personally, I have very eclectic taste in music and think of myself as quite discerning in that area and Prince's music has been part of my collection since first seeing him on the big screen and learning that he wrote produced and recorded everything himself.

Prince has written songs for other artists that I was not even aware of until yesterday and no surprise that I just happen to really like the two that I just found out about...I have known the songs, but not the fact that he wrote them...

"Nothing Compares 2 U" performed by Sinead O'Connor and "Manic Monday" performed by The Bangles

Well, now you can catch up on the music you ignored and have a great time doing it.

I like quite a few Prince songs, and always respected his talent, even if his style of music isn't really my thing. Bowie affected me more personally, but still, sad to see Prince gone.

It is a bit of a debate. I recall Taylor Swift/Calvin Harris/Miley Cyrus had a bit of a twitter spat for a couple days about this issue. IIRC Swift was not allowing some of her new stuff to be on sites that did not pay the best per view rates and Miley called her out on it because she was really just hurting the fans or something along those lines because it wasn't like you made a lot of money either way on views compared to other income streams as an artist.

Sorry. I'm not buying the death-from-OD scenario. He was a Jehovah's Witness and a strict vegan...not the type of person who is a habitual drug user. He may have been prescribed opiates for pain and accidentally took too many of them on the plane. That's very possible. But I seriously doubt the COD was due to a lifetime of drug abuse...

Your article hits on the point I was making as well as the general complaint about the industry. I have also heard Christ Martin from Coldplay talk about this behind the scenes business aspects of recording and rights. He is fairly indifferent to it all--it is what it is to him. There seems to possibly be a bit of a generational divide in how artists perceive the internet as either a plus or a minus. In Chris's case, he owns 40% of the rights to Coldplay songs but for the first 20 years from the release date, his rights are fairly meaningless in relation to the record company's. This has also come up in stories regarding Zayn Malik and his time with One Direction regarding not being able to do the music he wanted to do and even when his mates supported him doing that, the record company committees stripped all that out to get the product they wanted.

I tend to agree. The people closest to him confirm that he would make fun of the musicians that would sneak out between recording sessions to play around with drugs. He appeared to be fairly health conscious and now they have said that he recently had hip replacement surgery which might account for the Rx drugs. The fact that he was such a physical performer on stage and as recently as last week giving a concert that was reported to be typically Prince in its energy, he might have gone overboard with pain killers to compensate for any physical restrictions due to pain. I also heard something about a bad ankle. Anyway, time will tell.

Way back in the 1960's Dave Clark of The DC5 understood the importance of owning one's own music...

    Dave Clark: inscrutable pop mastermind
What is undeniable is that the 72-year-old Clark has prospered financially. Celebrated in the music industry as an innovative businessman, he was the first rock star to own his own master tapes. He published and produced his own records and managed the band himself. He also bought the rights to pop show Ready Steady Go.
