US academic is suspended for using the Chinese word for 'um' because it sounded like a racial slur A group of students threatened to withdraw from the class rather than ‘endure the emotional exhaustion of carrying on with an instructor that disregards cultural sensitivities’, adding: ‘Our mental health has been affected. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8701505/US-academic-suspended-using-Chinese-word-um-sounded-like-racial-slur.html
They should withdraw, forfeiting their tuition, and just go home. They're impeding the education of others there.
What if an American of Chinese origin had used the word? Would it warrant the same catastrophized reaction, or is this an example of resentment towards a guy who's made the mistake of being born white?
PC Run Amok... Too funny... It reminds of that situation a few years ago when someone used the word that sounds like a slur at a town council meeting. noun an excessively parsimonious, miserly, or stingy person. adjective miserly; stingy.
Yet these super sensitive students have no problems with violence and the destruction of public and private property in the service of “racial justice”. Their mental health was clearly compromised long before this incident. This is a level of intentional ignorance that could only come from a culture that now mines for racism like people used to mine for gold. And so shall it ever be until people stop making so called racism and victimization social currency.
The incident in question is similar to this, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controversies_about_the_word_niggardly
Lol...remember when college students were outraged over Steve Martin's King Tut video? These kids invent reasons to be offended, but as liberals, they'll go on in life doing everything possible to offend and insult the people they disagree with. Speaking of the N-word, since everyone knows exactly what that phrase means, when will the left declare it to be racist and come up with another phrase?
Another good reason to boycott and place sanctions on China! Student: "What is the largest tributary of the Amazon River?" Professor: "I can't tell you." Student: "Is Niamey the capital city of some country?" Professor: "I can't tell you." Student: "Ah, here it is in the world atlas ...." Professor: "No! Avert your eyes before it's too late! You may suffer permanent mental anguish for the rest of your life!" Ahhhh, I remember when I was a kid and all we had was an african-american and white TV.
Yes, they have. But they have been indoctrinated to believe that the use of certain words are racially accessible to some ...... but not to others. It's sort of a triple-negative logic that is very difficult for us older people to understand. I guess it means that people of a certain colour of skin are not allowed to use designated words that people of other colours of skin may use freely. But it is very good in that it teaches us that racism (judging people by their race) is a very bad thing.
