Prosecutors seek 15-year sentence for armed Capitol rioter (msn.com)

    Wow!
15 years just for being a Trump loving patriot and exercising his 2nd amendment rights.
I hope he enjoys his time in prison.
    A true American hero!

Did he actually go inside the building?

If so, did he go inside any part of the building that was not normally open to visitors?

When it's possible for a judge to sentence someone to 15 years for this, do we still think all the laws that exist are "good"?

Now you may get some idea how prosecutors are able to coerce people into pleading guilty and taking plea bargains.

I really do not know the answer to both of your questions.
Would you be willing to spend 15 years in prison for a guy like Trump?
    Just asking.

Prisons are more unpleasant places than many people realize.

In fact, what many people may not realize is the prisons they are kept in before they are found guilty are even worse than the prisons that convicted criminals are sent to.

Arbery defendant describes only being allowed out of jail cell 1 hour a day

Prisoners killed by guards in Florida prisons

Are you saying he deserves it because he's a Trump supporter and he had a gun?

Or are we going to stretch logic and claim he was "part of a mob" (guilt by association), and "he was trying" to do something?

Anyway, the prosecutor will probably force him into pleading guilty, and those on both the Left and Right will be too stupid to realize why they should care about someone who pled guilty.

I have complex-PTSD. I didn't see the whole riot but it still haunts me. I have tried to understand their position but it astounds me that **anyone** would be cool with mob attacking police officers. And, then to compound that toxicity, they side with the criminals.

Fortunately, many of them have lost their pleas of "I did it for my POTUS" and have been convicted. Can you image what it's like to be sentenced for crime that you only did because you believed in your POTUS and he turns his back on you? I've thought about it a gazillion times. They can't be resting easy on the inside.

And yet you claim to be a Democrat?

It just amazes me how ignorant people are about the beliefs of others who vote for the same people that they do.

“Normally open” doesn’t matter if it wasn’t open then. My doctors office is normally open, doesn’t mean I can break in at 2am

    Clearly those people were deluded.

Or they thought trying to implicate Trump would please the prosecutor and judge and probably lead to a lighter sentence.

But they closed it due to the large number of rowdy people.

Reasons why they closed it and timing does matter.

Some of those people did enter legally before the guards were ordered to close.

I’m assuming the left is outraged because they don’t want non violent offenders sent to prison.

This is why he deserves it:
They say the trial evidence showed that Reffitt planned for weeks ahead of January to travel to Washington, “with the specific intent of attacking the Capitol and taking over Congress.”

I’m fine with people who planned to commit violence going to prison, even if something screwed up their plan

How is something a crime if he did not commit it?

Even for something like attempted murder, the person has to pull their gun and try to shoot at the person before they can be convicted.
Simply pulling up to someone's house with a gun is not enough to be convicted of attempted murder (unless an agreement promising exchange of money has been made, but I think that would still probably be a separate crime).

With a crime like robbery, an implied threat has to be made. Someone who walks into a bank with a holstered gun, even if illegal, will not be charged with robbery.

Are we okay with laws that criminalize pre-crime?
It does sound a little like something out of the Dystopian film Minority Report, if that's the case.

I will answer your questions on the condition that you answer mine first.

It's a stupid and irrelevant question.

Show us the crime he committed that deserves years in prison.

But you can't show us that.

You can only claim he "was there" to commit a crime.

He has already been convicted of several crimes.
These are outlined in post #7 of this thread
But that has nothing to do to with what I am asking.

    Thought crimes right there.

One problem here is there's not really any specifics.
Guess these days you think it's just fair to assume that if someone has a gun and was in the wrong area, they were planning on committing violence, and it's okay to punish them for that violence, which they didn't actually end up committing?

Yes it’s called motive. Not a new legal concept.

    You're just being stupid.

    Motive requires a crime.

    Lol like these?
Jurors found him guilty of obstructing Congress’ joint session to certify the electoral college vote, of interfering with police officers who were guarding the Capitol and of threatening his two teenage children if they reported him to law enforcement.

How long do you think he deserves to be punished for just those crimes?

Does the presence of a gun really make that much difference in this situation?
