Putin is adding to his icebreaker fleet and will open the water paths to allow direct shipping via the Arctic circle. Wonder why America is not in on this? Given all the claims about global warming, seems a natural America would lead the way to the path using the Arctic sea.

For the alarmist group, can you explain why America is not in on this?

The Democrats have blocked American use of the Arctic.

They always do things to weaken us.

Putin asked Trump to stay away from the Arctic shipping lanes so Trump is keeping the US out of it.

It's kind of like a Panama canal for Russia. Plus, they control the Eastern passage.

Trump has been more militant towards putin than obama was. I know facts are inconvenient for trump's hate crowd, and I wish he had kept his campaign promises in regards to russia, given it is irresponsible to be militant towards another nuclear power who can exterminate every democrat in america in short order.

Russia with an economy the size of New York State is only a threat to the US if we are idiots and make russia think we are out to destroy them. And we have more than enough idiots not only on the democrat side but on the republican side to. One gets the idea that both sides have been secretly inbreeding, copulating with their sisters and having kids who get elected. That would explain it.

Perhaps the US isn't interested in that oil, and we have venezuela, who has the largest oil reserve on earth. It is warmer down there and we can always find an excuse to invade another nation, and take their resources. We have done it for years, in the interest of our elites. It is how we roll.

China may eventually put a halt to our mode of operation, as their economy becomes twice the size of ours and europe's together, or so the projections say, by 2030. And ironically, it was the greed of our elites that enabled and aided the rise of a communist state using mercantilism. In short, the hysteria towards russia is a tale told by an idiot.

    Really now.

It's more like the Democrats in Congress don't want us in the Arctic.

Trump wanted the U.S. to develop the Arctic and compete with the Russians. The Democrats stopped that by barring the U.S. from operating in the Arctic.

    So what?
Putin opens up a route and then what? Does he expect every ship to pay for the icebreaker going in front of it? He can’t outprice other routes, otherwise no one will use the route. You think Russia will make a killing? I doubt that.

America is not in on it because Trump seems oddly reluctant to directly confront Putin and strategic moves are not his forte either in executing or recognizing.

The ice breakers are merely the more "public" part of the military expansion going on in the Russian Arctic. Ice breakers sure will ease logistic challenges for their military bases.

Bugs the crap outta me and meanwhile we Canadians have some inuit rangers, a few signal intercept bases and a handful of ice breakers. Pathetic.

Judging by the wreckage of their carrier and the destruction to their only drydock, seems to me Putin is not truly all that much to worry about militarily. But his icebreakers can bust the path for those super ships who want to use the Arctic Ocean is what I make of it.

The way Obama rushed to seal it off, seems you are very accurate.

I read where Russia has two ports for it's icebreakers. I would imagine the icebreakers could do the job for a fee per trip. Thanks for the excellent maps. To help us out, I measured Greenland today at about 1650 miles long.

i don't know and won't guess. I suspect his icebreakers would collect a fee to help other ships make it through.

I did not know about that. I know Democrats are trying to stop the use of ANWR.

I find nothing using google and Federal sites to back up the Democrats stopped anything. I know they want to.

The media loves to discuss Russia except for our armor units on the Russian border. That they want us to not know much about. Trouble is, it is exposed anyway.

Your former PM Harper tried to make the North a priority.....seems it's fallen on deaf ears now.

Diefenbaker back in the day(1960s)....had vision for the north....if it was followed through to this day, there would be a significant canadian presence in the arctic today.

Because most trading nations believe in 10 years you will be able no go thru the northwest passage with just re-inforced bows. I don't understand what is in it for russia.

It won't be long before somebody will label his statements "The Putin Doctrine", so similar to our own "Monroe Doctrine"

Its a major policy failure on our part exacerbated by the fact that we are "under the American continental umbrella" and therefore our notions of defense priorities are skewed. Personally I'm embarrassed by our defensive posture and blase attitude towards defense expenditures. At least we are all be proud of the quality of our forces despite them being strapped, in some cases, with two or three generation old equipment.

Because it's part of Russia's continental shelf, and Washington doesn't like that. Actually Exxon Mobil was going to help develop the Arctic until Obama sanctioned Russia and they stopped. Then the Dems started the 'collusion' lies, so Trump couldn't undo it. When the President of French Total said he would ignore the sanctions and go off the petro dollar, he immediately died in a freak accident.

The US and Canada are freaking out now about Russia's claims over it's continental shelf, so Russia is arming itself heavily in the Arctic. What made it even worse, is that Putin said at one time that only Russian flagged ships will be allowed to use its northern route. I don't know if he changed his mind about that, but the route does cut shipping costs between the Far East and Europe and Russia will be using it for its LGN shipments.

Anyway the Arctic is considered a flash point. This might be why Putin asked for foreign investments. Not only for the help in costs, but to show he's willing to share the wealth with others. I'm only guessing of course. I don't know!

Yeah, I was thinking that if you're careful in keeping all your ships in tight row, it wouldn't take many more ice breakers to do 80 million metric tons than to do 20 million metric tons.

And how much money does it take to get able-bodied seamen to sail those icy waters? Aw hell, I'm too old to get a card now.

I would like to sail on Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba, in midsummer, no farther north than that, no, let me revise and extend my remarks: Lake Carlyle, IL.
