I went with other because I have ran into some conflicting information on this from some interesting studies in parapsychology that I first read about back in the 1990's.

It's hard to do that today. We should've done that way back when when we freed them. But to do it now is immensely more difficult. So I guess I would be saying no, no reparations. But I would advocate reparations if it were the 1860s.

My French ancestors were driven out of Canada after the Seven Years War. They all suffered. My Irish ancestors were starved in Ireland and excluded from opportunity when they reached America. I want reparations.

You can pay them out of your own pocket if you want to. I wouldn't be in favor of paying a single cent in reparations. I do agree that we have to get rid of Afffirmative Action and quotas, but my solution would be to just shut the programs down. Everyone should be taught that one has to work for what one receives in life. Look at what happened with the Oscars! A lot of whining and now we have Affirmative Action Oscars. "Affirmative Action Leroys," that is. As a result merit just went out the window and standards were lowered, as always happens when set-aside programs are put in place.

On the other hand, if there is a living person who has absolute proof that they were a cotton picking plantation slave, then, maybe we should consider helping them get a real job. But, no reparations. Read my lips: NO....More...freebies....

    I chose Other.

Great thread. Glad to see it.

Anyway, if individuals, or families feel compelled, & there are negotiations, & an agreement is realized, then fine, otherwise, like state sponsored, not so much.

Folks, we have a winning post here.

How about making this great post a Stickie, so those who are forever looking for reparations or other freebies can get a clue.

Neither my birth nor your birth could deny that, then why would you decline something that will improve community social status?

    Oh, ok.

So, to force a general population, comprised mostly by people who if anything, would likely contain DNA which could be traced to being from enslaved rather than owners if slaves, to reimburse the people that comprise likely the lowest per capita population OF slaves since time began?

Just because at one time this specific small ethnic group wants it?

Well, they were brought her and now legal US citizens, we do have programs for citizenry developments, they have their own share I suppose, then as having a slave lineage do you see some them now as well off and socially sound US citizens, are they accepted fully towards the American society that they are forced to live with, why is Martin Luther King became famous?

Only self-loathers and liberal-led governments obsessed with 'doing the right thing' whether it's the right thing to do or not, subscribe to the reparations nonsense. If those who are/were directly responsible are no longer around then by all means offer a guarded apology on their behalf, but no taxpayer cash should change hands.

I am not in favor of repetitions or putting blacks on reservations.

About the only plan I would support was on another forum which has since closed. Any blacks wanting to return to Africa would be given 50k, have to renounce their citizenship, and only allowed to immigrate back to the US if they paid back the 50k at 6% interest. Paid in full before returning to the US.

The fact is that freed slaves were offered the opportunity to return home as free citizens of a nation established to effect reparations for their servitude. "Wiki" Liberia.

Many become agitated over the notion that blacks be "given" anything, but the fact is that this is not about slavery per se, it is about the fact that the legacy of slavery persists, that the inequality has not been resolved, that blacks remain with an onus in this society for being black.

Paying cash to individuals I agree is not an intelligent solution, but I would favor govt action to rebuild black communities ravaged by poverty, discrimination and drugs (brought in by non-blacks, inevitably). We gave the Marshall Plan for Europe when it was ravaged, so why not a program to undo the damage done to African-Americans? Our fellow americans, no? Hating or disdaining them I see as treasonous. You can't hate millions of your fellow citizens on the basis of their origins, and still be a patriot. You are sabotaging this society.

You just had 8 years of the first black President and you're quoting inequality. I don't believe that they are unfairly discriminated against when you look at the NFL and especially the NBA, blacks are disproportionately represented...Should we start a program to get more Asian players in the NBA?

Being native American, I do know what discrimination is, one of the first questions I'm usually asked at any interview is whether or not I drink. Hell even my Mother in law asked that question before my wife and I married.

This strategy has been pursued for the last fifty years and it hasn't worked. Time to admit that Blacks will never amount to anything.

Really are you serious? Blacks are in the NBA, and so problem solved? What about all those being discriminated against in jobs and housing?

People assume NDNs drink, and they assume blacks smoke crack, and we hillbillies of course are all on meth. You may recognize some of the racism against Native people, but you're not seeing very clearly with regard to other groups.

Now if you really are familiar with Pine Ridge and the surrounding area, are you really going to oppose programs which combat racism and its effects, and create a level playing field? Because for NA the field is NOT level and I presume you know that.

Well, you tacitly admit you're a racist... that's not name-calling, that's simply using the words accurately. Racism is as racism does...

White racists do considerable damage to this country. Indeed they do owe some recompensense to the rest of us who suffer for their shenanigans.
