As David Paulin summed it up to me: Black guy murders white guy (in front of white guy's 12-year-old daughter) because white guy's dog sniffed the black guy's pants while white guy was taking his daughter to buy ice cream. Imagine how the media would play this if it had been a white guy who shot a back guy in front of his daughter under similar circumstances. From the San Francisco Chronicle: A Vallejo man has been arrested and charged with murdering a man in Hayward in 2009 after taking exception to one of the victim's dogs sniffing at his leg, authorities said Wednesday. Dereak Turner, 24, shot and killed Thomas Cunningham, 38, outside a liquor store near Vermont and B streets about 10 p.m. on Nov. 24, 2009, police said. Cunningham had been walking home with his 13-year-old daughter after buying some ice cream. Comparing this case to that of Trayvon Martin's death reveals a national media double standard when it comes to violence. It sickens me that, in the face of crime statistics revealing a vast disparity in the likelihood of a black being killed by a white, compared to a white being killed by a black, the media actively encourages a counterfactual public perception - that blacks are gunned down by whites more often. Sounds to me like the situation is completely and totally hypothetical One could say the absolutely opposite with equal validity. Now, was the national media supposed to pick up and run with a story about an arrest in a 3 year old murder? I am not sure I understand the complaint in this case. It is because the media is not running enough stories on the case and that is due to the baseless charge that the media is trying to cover up the racial aspects of the case? It seems odd to make a claim, as the opinion piece did, that has no basis but conjecture.
