    Ukraine Conflict Updates
Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, February 1, 2023

Click here to read the full report.
    Key Takeaways

    • Ukrainian officials are continuing to warn about Russia’s intention of conducting a decisive offensive operation in Donbas in February and/or March, supporting ISW’s most likely course of action assessment (MLCOA).
    • Russian President Vladimir Putin may be setting conditions for further Russian cross-border raids into northeastern areas of Ukraine, likely in an effort to further domestic information operations and pin Ukrainian forces against northern border areas.
    • Russian forces continued ground attacks northeast and southwest of Bakhmut.
    • Russian forces continued limited ground attacks to regain lost positions on the Svatove-Kreminna line on February 1.
    • Russian forces are continuing to carry out unsuccessful disruption missions on islands in the Dnipro River delta in Kherson Oblast in an effort to prevent Ukrainian forces from gaining ground on the islands.
    • Russian officials plan to propose a moratorium on the public procurement law to simplify spending procedures amid an increasingly costly war effort.
    • The Wagner Group’s prison recruitment efforts may have slowed in previous months.
    • Crimean partisans may have conducted an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in occupied Crimea on January 30. . . .

Ukraine's new weapon will force a Russian shift
By Mike Stone and Max Hunder

WASHINGTON/KYIV (Reuters) - The United States has answered President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's plea for rockets that can strike deep behind the front lines of the nearly year-long conflict with Russia.

Now Russian forces will need to adapt or face potentially catastrophic losses.

The new weapon, the Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB), will allow Ukraine's military to hit targets at twice the distance reachable by the rockets it now fires from the U.S.-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). If included as expected in an upcoming weapons-aid package first reported by Reuters, the 151 km (94 mile) GLSDB will put all of Russia's supply lines in the east of the country within reach, as well as part of Russian-occupied Crimea. . . .

These are all armor but not all tanks. Bradley fighting vehicles are great but not tanks neither are the German Marders. Hey troop fighting vehicles and armored recon vehicles are just great and have an important purpose as part of the mix of armored vehicles.

...found this interesting from a sort of moralistic view point....

    upload_2023-2-3_10-23-33.png

This is referring to the supply of DPICM/cluster munitions which Russia have used extensively in Ukraine but to my knowledge Ukraine has shown a degree of reticence on the basis of the UXO legacy for its civilian population. Around 40% of all the sub-munitions fail to detonate leaving an area vunerable to civilian casualties after a conflict has ended or moved on....maybe its time to drop that argument now as the Russians have killed more than any legacy UXO would...
But, I'm on the fence with cluster munitions.....I can see the benefits of them on the basis of the trench lines and human wave attacks. HE rounds are nowhere near as effective as cluster ordnance...I don't know...??

US has a massive stock of 155mm DPICM as well

....I'll stick to my 40% margin...

Russia on the other hand don't give a crap....

    Ukraine Conflict Updates
Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, February 2, 2023

Click here to read the full report.
    Key Takeaways

    • A Ukrainian intelligence official stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian military to capture Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts by March 2023, supporting ISW’s most likely course of action assessment (MLCOA) for a Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine.
    • Russian authorities blocked internet cell service in occupied Luhansk Oblast likely as part of an effort to intensify operational security to conceal new Russian force deployments in Luhansk Oblast.
    • Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov supported ISW’s MLCOA assessment and possibly suggested that Russian forces have mobilized substantially more personnel for an imminent offensive.
    • Russian officials are continuing efforts to frame the war in Ukraine as an existential threat to Russian audiences in order to set information conditions for protracted war and maintain domestic support for continued military operations. These efforts on the part of Russian officials are not succeeding in generating the likely desired effect of motivating Russians to want to participate in the war, however.
    • Russian and Ukrainian sources suggested that Russian forces may be preparing offensive actions in the Svatove area.
    • Russian forces intensified ground attacks in the Kreminna area on February 2.
    • Russian forces continued ground attacks northeast and southwest of Bakhmut.
    • Russian officials are likely trying to prepare the Russian military’s disciplinary apparatus for an influx of mobilized personnel.
    • Russian forces and occupation authorities continue efforts to identify and arrest Crimean Tatars on allegations that they associate with extremist movements banned in Russia.
    • Russian federal subjects and occupation authorities continued announcing patronage programs to support infrastructure projects in occupied territories. . . . .
Ukrainian forces continue to strike Russian concentration areas and logistics in southern Ukraine. Social media sources amplified geolocated footage on February 2 that shows Ukrainian forces striking Russian surface-to-air missile systems near Oleskhy, Kherson Oblast, reportedly belonging to the 80th Separate Arctic Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Northern Fleet.[38] Geolocated footage published on February 2 shows the aftermath of a reported Ukrainian HIMARS strike on a Russian ammunition depot near Novoukrainka, Zaporizhia Oblast.[39] . . .

Ukrainian sources reported that Russian officials are continuing covert mobilization measures in occupied territories. The Ukrainian General Staff reported on February 2 that Russian occupation officials in Horlivka, Donetsk Oblast ordered all budget and communal institutions to submit lists of persons to the occupation military registration office and that a special commission will evaluate these people for conscription into the Russian military.[47]

Ukrainian sources reported that Russian servicemembers continue to face issues in completing contracts due to the partial mobilization decree. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that the Russian military is refusing to release 300 Russian soldiers operating in Luhansk Oblast from service, despite the fact that their three-month contracts have expired.[48] The Ukrainian General Staff reported that these Russian servicemembers have not received any financial support despite their continued service.[49] ISW continues to assess that the Kremlin will not formally rescind the partial mobilization decree in order to legally justify the continued service of mobilized personnel for an indefinite period of time. . . .

I’m wondering, Why mention it if it isn’t significant?...this guy doesn't just spout any old crap for no reason....he's the mouthpiece of Putin....

Is this the start of a “We strove valiantly, but the whole world was against us.” narrative?

Are they now starting to contemplate a significant reversal and preparing the people for defeat?

    hmmmm......
