President Vladimir Putin has sent condolences after a Russian air strike accidentally killed three Turkish soldiers in northern Syria.

The soldiers were supporting Syrian rebels in efforts to capture the city of al-Bab from so-called Islamic State.

It is part of a broader offensive by Turkey to push IS and Kurdish fighters away from Turkey's southern border.

Russia and Turkey, who back opposing sides in the war, have been jointly targeting IS in air strikes recently.

A Russian aircraft attacked a building where some of the soldiers had been deployed near al-Bab, the Turkish military said.

It had been planning to hit IS targets but "by accident three of our soldiers were martyred when a building was bombed where our units were", it added.

Eleven other soldiers were wounded in the friendly fire incident on Thursday.

The Kremlin has issued a statement (in Russian) saying President Putin had, in a telephone call with his Turkish counterpart, "expressed condolences over a tragic incident which resulted in the deaths of several Turkish troops in the al-Bab area".

The incident comes after a warming of ties between the two countries, which had previously been strained after Turkey downed a Russian jet near the Syrian border two years ago.

Cool, an accident happened, Russia apologized, Turkey seems to have accepted the apology, not much to discuss.

A soldier is a soldier, either respect them or not, affiliation of country shouldn't matter.

Why? These soldiers serve Turkey who desecrated the Hagia Sofia, destroyed Christian and Jewish Holy Sites? No they are Ottomans, and are enemies to us all.

Some of the first engagements between Syrian government and the FSA around Al Bab have just started today as they(SAA, FSA and the Turks) are all converging on the city, hope it does not amount to much and they can both keep focused on ISIS. The Russians may have to pick sides if they go all guns for the city with the Turks/FSA and the Syrian gov. The Kurds are nearing Raqqa daily and I still worry the FSA will attack them on the west of the Euphrates forcing them to send reinforcements away from that key city.

Are they in uniform? Are they following the most basic rules of a military?

They are not out there in civilian garb laying bombs on the side of the road.

Soldiers, of all nationality, deserve respect when they fall in combat.

I'm not saying you have to like them or even be on their side, I'm saying they were willing to do what they had to do for their country and they did.

Germany killed Jews, the USA dropped atomic bombs on Japan — means, today it is necessary to hate soldiers of NATO? Okay :)

I do not like Germans..although I am partially of German decent. US dropping bombs on Japan helped create Godzilla movies, the Japanese are forever grateful!

    In Russia, this anecdote.

Sitting little girl and furiously rips apart a teddy bear. She asked - "Girl, what are you, so the bears do not like??". She answered, looking askance: "Yes, I and people did not really ..."

Hell, through an translator it is impossible to convey the meaning of the adult her response that she and the people is not very much loved :)

The alliance between Russia and Turkey is a very uneasy one, so there might be more to this than meets the eye. Here's a few scenarios as to what did or didn't happen.

1 - Russia bombed the Turks accidentally.
2 - Russia knew the Turks were there and bombed them as some kind of warning.
3 - Turkey planted some Turkish Kurd or Alevi conscripts there, and then sent messages they were ISIS as an excuse to break off relations.

If it was a trap, then it's smart that Russia didn't fall for it.

I suspect there'll be an "accident" withe Russians at some point...using GARMIN GPS held down by rubber bands in their outdated jets not very effective in today's combat operations.

If the Lithaues keep criticizing Vlado the next strike will be on the Mega Shopping Centre and half the city will drown when the aquarium breaks.

I didn't know they were all converging on the same city, but I assumed it might have been something like this because the Russians do not make mistakes so readily... especially when it comes to human lives. This is the reason for the different scenarios I made up as to what might have, or might not have occurred.

1 - Russia bombed the Turks accidentally.
2 - Russia knew the Turks were there and bombed them as some kind of warning.
3 - Turkey planted some Turkish Kurd or Alevi conscripts there, and then sent messages they were ISIS as an excuse to break off relations.

There are problems as well in other parts of the world. As an example: Russia would not allow pressure on Cyprus by Nuland and company in favor of Turkey.

Maybe Russia is telling Erdogan to 'heel'. If so, let's see if he will. A Russian diplomat told Greece in view of Turkey's aggression in the Aegean, that one never knows how an unstable person like Erdogan will react when his country is being squeezed on all sides.

There is an ongoing civil war in the southeast with the Kurds. He is also trying to keep them from forming a nation in Syria along Turkey's border... something the US supports. Erdogan now is starting to realize that the Alevi population might be crypto Christians... and that they really do not support him or his ambitions towards a caliphate.

As an example, when Bibles were introduced into Turkey in 2008, 8 million copies were sold. If one considers that each family would buy only one Bible, that alone would come to about 20 million people. ..so together with the Kurds, the non Turks are about half the population.

In the meantime he has alienated so many of his own subjects with the firings and arrests because of the coup, so that it's amazing he's still standing. It can only be because of the ruthlessness of his responses and of his followers. The Kurds though are equally ruthless, so Erdogan is not having an easy time.
