Looks like the big loser in this will be Bulgaria, and nobody cares about them. No matter what "magic tricks" the EU plays, Europe needs Russian natural gas for at least another ten years, unless they want to pay an enormous price to burn something else, like Chanel No. 5, to heat electricity turbines. And I'm convinced of one thing: Germany will not commit financial suicide for the central bankers in Frankfurt....

I believe your story said that Russia indicated that if it can't use a southern pipeline, then, instead, they'd use a northern pipeline that goes directly to Germany. Poor little old Bulgaria gets screwed royally, but that doesn't bother the central bankers in Frankfurt one bit!

Russians make a deal with Turkey, instead of the South Stream. This is both good business and politics.

The European Central Bank in Frankfurt (and its allies in the Bank of England, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the IMF) are trying to use energy market and currency manipulation to destroy the Russian Ruble. The central bankers may cause a retaliation that will shock the world if oil prices are driven further down, and stay there several months. The car I drove most often is big luxury car, and it gets lousy gas mileage. I definitely like lower gasoline prices, but I don't want to see a war break out in Europe because of it.

    I love these gas wars!

Paid $3.06 this morning, which in Santa Monica is almost a joke of a price it's so low.

    Saw 2.83 in Cerritos too

Back to the price where I'll take a nice 100 mile drive up the Malibu coast for fun!

This has to be seen for what it is. Russia announced this decision only after it made a pivot to Turkey to compensate for South Stream.

I agree with Pollycy; Bulgaria is a big loser in this, to the tune of hundreds of millions euros annually. That ought to do a lot for EU solidarity, right?

Putin will not let the West keep hammering Russia economically without a response. In the meantime, Russia can weather the current situation. It's likely the markets will cry 'uncle' before Russia does. Reportedly, 20% of US junk bonds are in the energy sector, which is now very vulnerable to lower prices due to marginal shale operators. This could trigger another 2008 scenario.

Politically, it's interesting to see Putin making this deal with Turkey, a NATO, but not EU, member.

I'd say the fallout is uncertain, but I don't see this as particularly negative for Russia. The Turkey deal may actually be better for Russia in the long run, as it helps cement Russia's presence in the Eastern Mediterranean. Plus, it may have benefits for Syria in regard to ISIS.

    Interesting development, for sure.

    1. The only losing side in the deal is Bulgaria. Amazingly our historical enemies who suffered from us for ages and made us suffer for even longer (turks) appeared to be more friendly to us then a nation which preserved and got independence only due to russian freewill. But the choice is of course theirs.
    2. The very idea of selling russian gas to southern europe is not given up. The territory of Turkey and Greece is used for gas pipe, which is capable of delivery of more gas than Turkey and Greece needs. This means that a gas pipe might end up with the station for condensed gas, which in turn might be sold to any mediteranean country or even country that has access to the sea and is able to get gas tankers.
    3. Turkey and Greece are becoming the benefitors of cheaper gas and get the possibility to make business on russian resources. They can make plan for any indutry which needs a lot of gas fuel. Technically it will be not a problem. Our slavic brothers lost such a chance due to the inability of their poiliticans to make a decision to the benefit of their nation rather than a benefit of their masters.

You are not the world. Turkey and Russia need it. The others do not matter.

Yazverg, as you put it, the choice is theirs. The market is still free.

The market is ruled. The rules in world trade changed much more often then the rules of any sport game. World market has never been free and will always be controlled. But there is a place for the choice for sure. At least a nation has a freedom not to buy from it. Europe talked so uch about alternative energy that it is about the time to make this dream come true.

South Stream was all about bypassing Ukraine and supplying gas.

Turk-Stream has many more possibilities. Ukraine is bypassed, Europe can still get gas, but this deal has many far-reaching implications.

Bravo, Europe! You've cost your southern members jobs and money while stengthening Putin's hand at the crossroads between East and West in a vain attempt to keep Ukraine 'relevant'.
