I know this project. The Belgorod is a city-destroyer with the capability to launch torpedo drones with nuclear warheads with the purpose to hit coastal cities generating also devastating tsunamis.

The Belgorod [I know it with this name] has got also a rescue bathyscaphe and a little nuclear submarine for deep explorations.

Now ... my opinion is that it's so big that even Italian anti-sub systems would be able to detect it and to destroy it at a suitable distance from our coasts. But I'm obviously not able to evaluate its stealth capabilities for real.

Is it a big submarine target?

If it's that big....it probably isn't stealth. Personally nothing of the Russkis "hardware" is stealth....it certainly sounds good though.

I don't think the vision is for the Belgorod to be stealthy so much as it is to be the platform for some new torpedo technology they are hoping to develop one day.

Or, it could be a diversion. You are much more well-versed in Putin's craziness but this is setting off my Spidey-senses. He's up to no good (as usual).

The Belgorod is not being scrapped. It is a sub in service since 1980 that is being scrapped. The Belgorod is replacing it. From the OP link:

“The submarine Dmitry Donskoy has been removed from the fleet and is to be scrapped,” the state-run RIA Novosti news agency quoted an unnamed Russian defense industry source as saying.

The K-329 "Belgorod" is equipped with a mixed type of weapons - Poseidon nuclear charges and a line of robotic systems that are used to work at a serious depth.
In 2018, a number of American publications suggested that Belgorod's main task was to assemble a US submarine tracking system (similar to SOSUS). However, the Russian military notes that the nuclear submarine can be used to conduct special operations in the interests of the Russian Federation. There is an opinion that the K-329 was created as a universal hunter for aircraft carrier groups of a possible enemy.
Experts from the American edition of Covert Shores consider the "hybrid power plant" to be the main feature of Belgorod. Experts believe that a special low-noise turbine makes the submarine virtually invisible to sonar systems while moving at the maximum diving depth.
Also, American analysts saw on satellite images that Belgorod also has propellers of a special shape. Their difference from the classic ones is the angle of the blades, which allows the K-329 to pick up speed and stop much faster than other submarines, while there are almost no sound vibrations.
According to TASS, the K-329 is capable of carrying six Poseidon vehicles on board, some military experts confirm this. The tactics of the Russian submarine fleet will also be unpredictable - the Belgorod submarines have the ability to launch Poseidon drones without even approaching the enemy.
In addition to six Poseidon torpedoes, each of which has a nuclear charge of more two megatons, the K-329 can carry the AS-12 Losharik deep-sea submersible, a secret nuclear submarine used for special tasks at great depths.
This is a very good submarine.

It's so big that I could hit it using my Olympic bow!

    It's very big ...
One of the ways you can detect a stealth fighter is to note the air it moves.
A so big submarine moves a lot of water ...

You cannot avoid this, it's physics. If you make a big object move through a liquid [also air, a gas, at the end is a liquid from a physical perspective] you will generate agitations in the fluid. This doesn't mean sounds, not at all.

There are ways to note those agitations. Satellites will spot that giant as soon as it will leave the naval yard.

But if NATO can destroy your new platform ... how will you be able to launch your new incredible torpedoes?
    I wonder ...

    Russia has a problem.

It's cold. For all it's size, there is only one area suitable for agriculture. I'll be getting back to that.

After a nuclear war, you will have some degree of nuclear winter. The infrastructure that supports us will be devastated...

Russians will still have to eat, actually, they'll have to starve if they don't freeze. Nuclear war for them is suicide, pure and simple.

    Putin knows this.

Well they might be able to but after it is too late if they are able to develop nuclear powered nuclear bomb torpedoes that can traverse a much greater range. Estimates I have seen is this fat boy sub will only be able to hold about 6 of them because the torpedoes are going to be so big. We will see.

The new trick would be that a torpedo drone would be able to navigate on its own for many kilometers underwater.
A nuclear sub with nukes had to get close to the enemy coast. This new system can allow the sub to stay well far from enemy coast.
The real question is: are those torpedo drones so effective? I don't think so ...

So far as I have seen, they are still in development and the sub was commissioned in anticipation of their eventual arrival. I mean Japan had a sub that could launch a couple aircraft toward the end of World War II that may or may not have been in a position to launch a bio attack on the US mainland with depending whose version of the story you want to believe.

I think that Russian engineers know about all the nuances. And they are taken into account accordingly.

:roflol::roflol::roflol:They are taken into account, hence why they decommissioned the POS. They couldn't afford the maintenance either. Russian drone torpedoes?! :roflol:
Usually when you decommission something, you replace it with something superior......Is it to be their doomed hypersonic BS technology?
I watched the demo and instantly thought of Captain Bilko.

"Poseidon" nuclear charges do not actually exist outside the imagination of Vladimir Putin.

A few years back there was a lot of talk about how many of these were so badly maintained they were a major health hazard

A common problem with Soviet era/Russia era nuclear powered ships.

What is Ukraine? The Russians in Ukraine are carrying out a special operation according to plan. Everything is going great.
200,000 Russians are fighting successfully against 700,00 Ukrainians. At the same time, keep in mind the fact that the EU and the US have overwhelmed Ukraine with weapons.
However, we can not talk about the military aspect of the special operation in Ukraine, we can discuss sanctions against Russia. How did these sanctions affect the Russians and, for example, the Europeans. Where is your prime minister? Where is the British Prime Minister? How does the German chancellor feel? How much does your petrol cost?
And don't forget, winter is coming.:roflol::roflol::roflol:

More recently, at this forum, many said that "Caliber" exist only in Putin's imagination.
Want to check the existence of "Poseidons"?

Not really. The U.S. has plenty of 40 year old nuclear powered warships.
