One of the weirder things to have happened lately..

" A man who attempted to sail to Ireland from Dorset in an inflatable dinghy has been rescued by coastguards.

The man, believed to be American and in his 40s, was picked up south of Durdle Door having drifted eastwards from Osmington Mills on Wednesday afternoon.

The 6ft (1.8m) inflatable boat had paddles as a mast and rudder and a plastic sheet for a sail.

He was rescued by a diving team and taken to Lulworth Cove where he was treated for sunburn.... "

He was in the middle of the South coast, 400 miles from Ireland, which is off the West coast. Geography's a bugger.

I was coming back from a job in the bush along what we laughingly call National Highway One (this was a few years ago, it's a lot better now) when I saw a young Japanese man on a bicycle towing a little trailer. My colleague and I thought this was a bit strange. We turned our vehicle around and had a chat with him. We asked him where he was going. "Alice Springs" he told us. 950 miles or 1600 km we told him and not advisable during summer especially on a bike. He looked a bit stunned, he thought Ayers Rock/Uluru was about 200 miles north. Thankfully he turned back to the city.
