I was struggling to figure out what happened. I found myself asleep in the back seat of my car, with my car on auto pilot, and clearly we had gone off the road. My mind was racing to recall why I was in this position as I struggled to move. But I was struggling with sleep paralysis and couldn't force myself to completely wake up. I was thinking this must be a blood sugar crisis. It can be that way if I pass out. But why did I crawl into the back seat while the car was driving?!?! I was so confused!!! But worst of all I could feel that we were off the main road and I had no idea where. It was horrifying!!! With each moment I was hoping we didn't hit something or go off a cliff.

I struggled and struggled to wake up and take control of the car for the longest time. Finally I was able to open my eyes and see my bedroom. WHAT?!?!?!

I have complex-PTSD so I have nightmares all the time. The following helps me so I wanted to pass it along.

    1. Personification - Make up a being and name it whatever you want. That person will represent the "monster" in the nightmare. Think about that person before you fall asleep. Call the person's name in your dream state and tell him or her to go away and leave you be. He or she might not listen so be stern and matter-of-fact. Tell the monster that you will deal with him/her later but to leave you alone at that moment.

After that, you should be able to wake yourself up.

    2. Silly details - In your dream state, look at your hands and feet and start counting them. Squeeze your hands while you count your fingers and squeeze your toes while you count them. The squeezing should help your brain force you to wake up.

Hope this helps you in some way.

    Interesting.

I have successfully managed to have lucid dreams before. That is very cool. It simply involves training yourself to tell yourself you're dreaming, when you're dreaming. Then you can take control and do what you want. The first time I did it, I flew out the window of a train and flew like a bird all over the city. But the funny thing is that while you know you're dreaming, you are still dreaming and don't think to do things you might think when you're awake. So it isn't entirely lucid dreaming.

Scary: Back when I was in high school, a buddy and I watched the movie Dawn of the Dead at his place. After that was over somewhere around midnight, I had to walk home for about a mile through a wooded area and over a hill on a dirt trail. I didn't have a flashlight but the moon was bright. Still, the night didn't feel right - no doubt a lingering effect from watching zombies eat people.

As I walked, I started feeling more and more uncomfortable. I can still recall that there was a breeze blowing through the trees causing them to creak and moan as they swayed in the wind. High overhead the wind was clearly much stronger as dark clouds raced by blocking the moon from time to time and causing near total darkness. And then as I walked, I started hearing something behind me. At first I thought it was just my imagination. But then I would stop and it would stop. As I began to walk again, I could hear it start moving again behind me. Before long I was sure I was being followed - possibly by a wolves, or a bear, or mountain lion [cougar]. There had also been reports of escaped domestic dogs forming packs and stalking people like a wolf pack. As this all raced through my mind I began to pick up the pace. And when I did, it started walking faster as well.

I continued walking faster and faster and soon began to run. And when I did, the thing began to run as well. The terrain was uneven which made my footing unsure. I was running as fast as I could and nearly stumbled several times. And with each step, the thing behind me was getting closer and closer. Finally I knew I wasn't going to make it out of the woods in time. It was going to catch me. The best thing I could do was turn and fight. So in one movement I stopped, swung around, clenched my fists, and screamed at the top of my lungs. But it was dark behind me and I couldn't see it coming. It hit me with full force right in the chest. I fell backwards and was completely at its mercy. A moment later I realized it was licking my face. It was Grunt - my buddy's black lab. He had followed me home and was playing.

I once asked a cemetery grounds keeper if he was afraid to sleep in his shack in the cemetery at night. His reply -- "Son, it ain't the dead people you have to worry about".

Driving my Z like a bat out of hell, I came into a 90 degree hairpin turn braking hard. But I was a fraction of a second late coming off the brake. As I made a 90-degree left doing something close to 60 mph, three of the four wheels came off the ground and we nearly went into a rock wall head first. We made it through the turn on one wheel but then the car slammed down so hard I thought for sure it was damaged. But then in a moment it was over. We made it...by the skin of our teeth.

I was so lucky I never killed anyone including myself.

Riding my cafe racer [motorcycle] on a freeway in Los Angeles - the 91 Fwy East coming up on Bellflower Blvd, IIRC - I had some very close calls.

It was dark. It was raining. I was moving to the right lane to exit. And we were coming up to a curve. A car was stalled in the right-most lane with its lights out. I didn't even see the car until I was right on top of it! I layed it down hard and to the left. It was so close that I actually saw my front tire pass under the bumper of the stalled car. But I cleared it by an inch or two. I then fired out into traffic while fishtailing wildly on the wet surface. I was ALL over the freeway for about five seconds. But I got it under control and didn't hit anything or get hit.

Another time I hit diesel fuel on the freeway. It was like hitting black ice. My front tire instantly tried to wash out on me at about 60 mph. Then the rear tire started sliding as well. I had to slam my feet down at that speed several times on each side to avoid going down in heavy traffic, before I regained some traction.

After those two incidents, actually my second and third close calls on a street bike, I quit riding on the street.

Note that you are 30X more likely to die on a motorcycle than if driving a car.

About three times a year, going back about 10, I have a sleep paralysis dream. It’s awful. It usually involves being asleep at the wheel. I am 100% going to die. No matter how hard I try to open my eyes, it’s impossible.

I was held hostage at gunpoint for 24 hours on a Delta jet. We were flying into Lima Peru but it was fogged in. They had expected the fog to lift but after circling for many hours we were running out of fuel. We finally flew North and landed without permission on a military base - we had no choice as it was that or crash. We were immediately surrounded by military personnel with automatic weapons. And we were held there for 24 hours. It was about 100 degrees in the daytime. We had no food or water after a time. We had no air conditioning because the engines were dead. The toilets were all full. It stunk. And we didn't know if they were going to kill us or hold us hostage indefinitely. We had no idea what was going on until it was all over.

Some people were getting so desperate that they were talking about trying to charge the guys with the machine guns. Luckily for me, I had worked 36 hours straight before boarding the plane. I slept through most of it. LOL!

The first moment that I realized something was strange was landing at Chiclayo. I woke up as we were hitting the runway. I was looking out the window and saw several planes that had been destroyed and burned, lining the runway. I remember thinking WTF?!?!?! The reason for the destroyed planes was a fairly recent civil war. It was only then that we realized this was a military base and not just another airport. Finally, after about 24 hours and after extorting gobs of money from Delta, the "Black Eagles" allowed us to refuel and leave.

The entire time I was in Peru it was all cloak and dagger. Because I was there representing a major US company, I was considered at high risk for kidnapping and being held for ransom. So I had an armed escort everywhere I went. We took a different route each day. And I used a false name for all unofficial documentation. It was quite the trip.

Strange note: On my way back from Peru, having not slept much for days, after 8 hours on a plane and a long trip, while in the Atlanta airport I was approached and put on the evening news. It was a man-on-the-street interview. So strange!!!

I then went and sat down and couldn't help but overhear a group of men talking all around me. Finally I realized they were all physicists so I introduced myself as a fellow physicist. They went on to tell me about the paper that was just presented: It was the first evidence for dark energy. There was a new force in the universe and I just happened to run into the people on the front line. It was so surreal!

The more I think about it, the more I realize I've have had a strange life. I had almost forgotten that at the age of 17 I was kidnapped and held hostage at gunpoint for about four hours. The short version is that we had moved from Southern California to Northern California. One of the only two people I knew in town was the son of our real estate agent. He was a year younger than me but it was a small town and everyone knew pretty much knew everyone. He invited me to a party so I could start meeting people.

I hung out at the party until midnight or something and went home. It was an uneventful evening. I believe it was two nights later that three guys met me at my car as I was leaving work. They were all bigger than me and one displayed a large-caliber pistol. They said they wanted their weed back! WHAT?!?! They said they had a crop growing at the house where the party was held and the next day it was all gone. I was the new guy and somehow they decided that I had taken it. The guy with the gun got in my truck with me and instructed me to drive. The other two followed me in their truck.

As he talked I began to understand the situation and was trying to convince him that I had no idea about any of this. At the same time, I seriously considered ramming a power pole on his side, along with other ideas. I was thinking it was my life or the truck. How do I kill this guy? He wanted me to drive him to the homes of the only two people I knew. I pretended to be lost which gave me time. Slowly he began to listen to reason. How could I possibly know about any of this?!?!? I finally convinced him to let me go and promised I wouldn't go to the cops. And I honored that promise. For some number of weeks they were watching me and following me around. But eventually I didn't see them anymore.

We left Los Angeles because of the gang violence infiltrating our neighborhood. And I walked right into a kidnapping in a rural community 500 miles away.

Over the years I've worked some crazy long shifts - not really shifts, as a private contractor I just worked around the clock sometimes. On one occasion I worked about two 35-hours shifts back to back on 5 hours of sleep. By the time I got out of there I was having minor hallucinations. And I had to stop and think at times to recall if a green light meant something was running, or was it the red light, I would think?

But the closest calls occurred while driving. I had worked a similar length of time, I think about 30 hours straight, onsite at a hospital and only had to drive about 5 miles on the freeway to get home. But in spite of my best efforts, I fell asleep while driving home, twice. Luckily the loud buzzing sound in my head as I passed out would alert me that I was passing out. And I would snap back to consciousness.

Another really close call was when my ex and I moved. I had a 16 hour drive each way. At one point I fell asleep at night while driving alone on a remote mountain pass filled with curves and sheer cliffs. Going off the road was certain death. I woke up just in time. I don't recall how. But I remember that I was really lucky.
