Shared Genetics for Cannabis Use and Psychiatric Disorders

For years people have wondered about schizophrenia and marijuana abuse together. Often blaming the victim. But it turns out that they are both a genetic problem and actually both are a problem with the same genes. The same genes that cause schizophrenia are also the ones that cause cannabis abuse.

People affected by this genetic problem cannot catch a break.

There are genetic risks for alcohol and other substance abuse, too.

Someone predisposed to mental illness, is going to be predisposed to substance abuse. If you feel bad, you are more likely to abuse substances to not feel as bad.

I doubt weed has anything to do with it.

I know a lot of people that use marijuana. Only one of them is schitzophrenic ...but most of the others seem to have depression, anxiety or some other mental ailment that they use marijuana to help manage, with some success, I might add. Although its entirely possible they (or some of them) are just using marijuana to manage a marijuana dependency they makes them depressed or anxious when they havnt had their fix. Its prolly some of both. But either way, locking them up for it certainly isnt an appropriate solution...

    Very good point.

Like a lot of things, I'm sure a down side of cannabis can be found.

But, in terms of human disaster, that surely can not come within a country mile of alcohol.

Also, when the news or even research suggests weed is the problem, and pushes those people towards prescription antidepressants it isn't good either, even though that is probably what the funders or the research or articles wants.

If there were traces of motive in this research, they would lose any public funding they have.

    Science and motive don't mix.

I'm not talking about the motive of the researcher, i'm talking about the motive of the people who decide which research gets more publicity.

Did the researcher check to see if cocaine addiction was correlated with this gene? or alcohol? or video game addiction?

Do you think that maybe a study that included alcohol abuse with this gene would have been given the same publicity as a study that can be used to connect mental illness with cannabis abuse?

Ya, I dont like weed, I think it effects more people negatively than positively, but I have the same opinion of prescription pharmaceuticals, and so far as I know, weed has never contributed to organ failure or made someone believe real life was actually just a first person shooter video game...

agree, almost like people with bad pain that get addicted to pain killers, almost like they are addicted to not being in pain
