Officials with the Arizona chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans gave Arpaio its J. Edgar Hoover Law & Order Award in October 2011. Word of the award had gone unreported until the on-line magazine, Salon.com, published a story on Thursday. Officials with Arpaio's office told 3TV on Friday that the sheriff accepts a lot of awards and does not thoroughly vett everyone or every group wanting to give him one. Lisa Allen, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's department, said there was nothing about the group that concerned them. "Confederate doesn't send up any red flags," Allen said in a phone interview. "Now, if it was KKK or the Nazi Youth of America that would have set off red flags for us." Allen described the two high ranking officials with the confederate organization as polite "older gentlemen." Richard Montgomery and Curt Tipton gave Arpaio the award in October 2011, according the organization's on-line newsletter, "The Rebel Yell." The story includes a picture of the two men standing with Arpaio in the sheriff's downtown Phoenix office. The civil rights group, Southern Poverty Law Center, has described Son of Confederate Veterans as an "extremist" organization that has been led by officials with links to Neo-Nazis. Tipton, speaking on the phone, strongly disagreed with that description and called the people at the Southern Poverty Law Center a "bunch of con-men and scumbags." Tipton then declined to speak any further because, "we're not going to get involved with this baloney, if anyone is racist it's them." The Son of Confederate Veterans say they're dedicated to preserving southern culture. And members of the Arizona chapter travel the state and visit the burial sites of Confederate soldiers. On its website, the organization includes a disclaimer that they do not support racism or discrimination. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, officials with links to the Neo-Nazi movement overran the Confederate group about seven years ago and caused members to leave by the thousands. At the time of the award, Arpaio was being accused of racial profiling because of his controversial immigration sweeps in the Valley. The U.S. Department of Justice released the findings of a three-year investigation in December 2011 that accused his office of "bias" and "discrimination." And he was also sued in civil court.
You do know why nobody has filed criminal charges against him don't you? Because he was simply enforcing the laws on the books. Now hes a target of the left. Pretty pathetic but this is what happens when you go up against the liberal machine....they try and destroy you.
They will do that. However it is also the truth that if a black person speaks out truthfully against injustice, he will become a target. It has happened time and time again. In fact some have been killed. You may not like it, but there are SOME people on the right who hate Obama simply because he is black. That's the truth. Arpaio is proposing putting armed "posses" at schools. Will some of those people be the kind of folks that have an axe to grind against blacks? Let's suppose one of those people has the idea in his mind that all black people are dangerous. Let's suppose a black kid on the way to school says something he does not like. Because he has this thing that black people are dangerous, the kid makes an innocent move with his body that appears to the suspicious vigilante as something dangerous. The vigilante then shoots him because he feels his life is in danger. Then let's further suppose the vigilante is a member of some neo Confederate group. Public figures, especially those who are responsible for people who are entrusted by the public with welding the violent coercive power of the state, need to be very careful about appearance. They need to think about who they accept awards from.
The Los Angeles Unified School District has it's own police department. These officers are as well armed as any other LA police force, including their own SWAT team. They have officers in every school. I haven't heard of anyone targeting black kids specifically for being black, Latino or anything else outside criminal activity.
Just noting the Sheriff was reelected this past November. All local media waged war on Joe but they lost, as usual.
What is the "rule of law" and what part of the constitution is Joe disregarding Ummm? He is one of only a hand full of people in this country who is doing his job. Personally I see nothing wrong with racial profiling or profiling of any type that gets criminals off our streets and makes it safe for everyone. I've been profiled many times and I am glad to know that there are law enforcement people out there doing thier job.
As we can see from this statement, members of the Sheriff Joe "posse" that guards schools will be looking at hard at the brown kids, especially any that may say a word in Spanish, as being "subversive illegals", and will be looking for EVERY opportunity to nail these kids with searches, questioning, covert or overt surveillance and following, and on the close lookout if one of these kids might ever draw out a dark object out of his pocket. If the Sheriff Joe posse member blows away a "brown kid" going to illegally answer his cel phone int he school hallway and scares the guard that the kid may be drawing out a gun, well, that is just the price for "brown kids" who don't "toe the line." Its the brown kid's OWN fault! HE should KNOW to keep his hands empty and out int he open when walking in the halls. And the school and the taxpayer will spend whatever it takes for legal and lawsuit defense to make sure the good, hard-working posse member goes free! Its an honor for Arizona taxpayers to do this! Profiling WORKS for making sure brown kids are arrested while white kids are left alone.
Those are people who have been trained on how to deal with people. The only training Arpaio's posse has is in the use of firearms.
My arn't you the paranoid one. The only reason I can think that many like yourself are screaming and kicking is because you want your town to be like Mexico. (Drug infested and filthy with the deaths of innocents lieing in the streets) If you people acted like human beings you would find that whites would be more receptive. You all remind me of the blacks in Detroit. They too hated "law and order". They hated the cops and profiling. The whites abandoned the city to them and now you see what you got. (The state is getting ready to take over the city because the blacks don't have the capacity or intelligence to operate it themselves.

Like many of the Nativists....Sheriff Joe is old.....and therefore not much to worry about in coming decades. And like the Nativists in general....an embarassment to the Republican Party that actually wants to SURVIVE into the 21st Century.
Such a shame. Here white America has had to endure some stupid laws up till now, like, integration, having to rent your house to scum or unable to sell your house to who you want too. Having to be passed over for education entrance because some other unqualified low life is a different color. Unable to live in a neighborhood of your peers because some trashy minority wants to live in the same neighborhood. (Why would anyone want to live where they are not wanted anyways)

Of course. It use to be that way. It worked fine. Once you start letting the trash in you started having high crime, lower standards in schools, destruction of parks, etc. Why should a group that built a community into something civilized be forced to let in the uncivilized to ruin it?
