What other scholarships are offered over there? If someone is good at science, say, do they get a scholarship to study science? An athlete is just someone who is fit and good at running, or playing football. Its not really a 'career'. Kicking a ball around isn't a career. What exactly do these scholarships teach them that they haven't already learned?
there are scholastic scholarships as well. For big schools the football program (American, not the real football) is a big money maker for the school and thus recruiting the best HS players is important
I see no problem with it. The school can do whatever it wants with its money. If athletic scholarships help people get an education that wouldn't get one otherwise it is a great thing.
Of fours they should, it's a crime they don't get paid money. Colleges make millions off these athletes, they should be paid
Not really. I played D1 ball. As a freshmen they sit you down and do something like this. It takes about half an hour. Every student athlete knows the score goin in. We know the bare minimum GPA to maintain in order to stay eligible. It's not worth having a class on. It's pretty basic to understand, not to mention every coach will lay it out there for his players pretty plain jane. Take care of your business in the classroom or don't play. It's up to the student to be self motivated enough to do both. There are no excuses. Don't forget you have to get thru the NCAA clearing house before your ever allowed to play ball anyways. So the student has about 3 chances to understand how important GPA is before ever setting foot on a playing field.
They do get paid. It's called a free ride. If the college pays the athlete, the athlete in turn still has to pay to go to school. It's a wash.
Combine it with time management training, budgeting, etc., and have it taught by the head football coach or athletic director. Bring in former college players who didn't get a degree, and those who did. Bring in top college players who failed miserably in the pros. I really think this should be started in high school.
I did--not a full ride, but full tuition for a year. They give them the chance to get a free education in exchange for risking their bodies.
