Should Incest be legal between consenting adults?

No. Not a good idea.

 

The legal definition​ of marriage in the U.S. has most certainly not been around for "thousands of years."

 

I believe marriage is between a man and a woman, but my personal beliefs must not stop other people from pursuing happiness. If it doesn't affect me, I don't care what consenting adults do, its none of my business.

People have taken on multiple wives for eons, its not uncommon at all in history.

 

Legal marriage is distinct from legal parenthood. You dont need to be married for parental rights, regulations and obligations to apply to you. So arguments that we need legal marriage because of child support or custody are wrong.

Many people nowadays never get married legally and they dont miss out on much. If you think about it, there is little need for legal marriage to exist.

 

I just can't believe this is even being discussed. WOW! I guess NAMBLA is alright too then, right? My vote is a resounding, "NO"!

 

The topic is about the legal terms of incest in a consensual relationship between two adults. NAMBLA has nothing to do with this.

 

This is about incest not polygamy. It (*)(*)(*)(*)s up the genes! It could affect you if you stop and think about it. Your son or daughter could marry into an incest-riddled family one day without any clue of it. Your grandchildren could suffer genetically from that happiness. Still none of your business?

I already acknowledged above that I think incest is wrong. This entire post was created to discuss the LEGALITY of it, specifically the prison time that a person could get for it, and whether or not the act should be legal between consenting adults.

 

I disagree with you vehemently. I don't consent to letting consenting adults play Russian roulette with their offspring's genetics. They have no choice in the matter.

 

I think its disgusting, but I cant tell someone what they should or should not do with their own body, its truly the only thing we own in this world.

 

And it should not be LEGAL, period.

Not if those deficiencies aren't a result of known incest. It's known what incest can do to genetics. It's the equivalent of a person who knows he or she is HIV positive engaging in unprotected sex.

So for example, two down syndrome adults, would be ok, even though they present more of a genetic risk then inbreeding? I am not defending inbreeding at all, as it is sick, but where is the line drawn and why? A defect is a defect regardless of cause.

This is not the same as someone who knows he has hiv haveing unprotected sex with people who dont know, if the other adult knows that they are sleeping with an hiv patient with out a condom, then no harm no foul.

What marriage is and has been, as being between a man and a woman is just logical and has been around for thousands of years. Marriage is just a reflection of nature.

 

I could care less also what two or more people do in their bedroom. I do care about how children are raised and I do not want anything that corrupts the household to be blessed by the government as cool, by making it into a law. Nothing in life is perfect by we do not need to intentionally corrupt it.

 

Your statement that's in place of your avatar tells me all I need to know about who I'm discussing this absurd topic with. I think you believe you are a deep thinker and no one else is. Smarter than you really are in other words. To answer your questions, if they are consenting adults who aren't related to one another then that's their choice. However, when it comes to two relatives with normal genetics who think that they should have the right to bring forth children into the world that stand a high chance of having one or more genetic disorders, I say no. The child has no choice in the matter and has to live with his selfish parents choices. I think that would be wrong. Now I'm not leaving because you have run me off, I have things to do. Bye.

 

I am advocating personal liberty and responsibility for ones own actions. I do not want to control my countrymen if what they are doing does not affect me.

So by your logic, people with down syndrome, should be put in prison for having sex right? They are more of a genetic "threat" then inbreeding. I'm just looking for intellectual honesty thats all.
