Should prostitutes be treated like victims?

Some pimps catch and beat women, then tell them that if they run (after injuries heal), their gang will kill the woman's parents and siblings. Most these women choose to sacrifice themselves rather than their family get hurt. The pimps also tell them they will have fake Johns test them by asking, "if you are here against your will, blink your left eye." If she does, she is beaten, until she finally passes that test. Some customers are police officers, and mean in bed at that, so she believes the pimp that he has insiders at the police. Female pimps can be just as mean.

I've seen BBC videos of them talking to a distressed prostitute who sort of answered yes to being distressed but would not give clear answers. A scary pimp walked behind the reporters, then turned around to see the camera crew. They were concerned enough to get out and back up their reporters. The pimp walked across the street, and the distressed woman said she had to go talk to her boyfriend over there. The crew just told her that there is help if she needs it. (Most can't find help when they escape, and then go back).

So, should police automatically treat prostitutes like victims, or only if they testify against a pimp, or only if there is proof they are victims?

I've watched many hidden camera documentaries and urge nice guys to never hire a prostitute, as all the money goes to the pimp, and the woman feels raped even if she is afraid to tell you no. There are willing ones, but do you want to flip that coin with someone else's life even if there is only a 1 in 5 chance of getting it wrong?

She could go down to the bus station and leave that environment.

It's doubtful a pimp is going to risk prison over taking out her family because she left.

Inform the police before you go about what's happening and let your family know and just leave.

Some possible risk for sure but she did ultimately allow it to proceed that far in the first place.

And not all girls for hire have pimps, the good ones are professionals and although they may work for an agency it isn't associated with that much violence.

They usually have lists they develop over some time of regular customers and that is all they serve until maybe one of their clients recommends a new one.

I disagree with this lifestyle but I have no authority to judge them and without the crime its harmless to me as a person.

I've met some cool ladies of ill repute.

But for the most part they are being abused and exploited, imo.

For the most part yes but there are many exceptions. A close friend, now retired from prostitution and managing an old peoples home specialised in two areas, the disabled and high end corporate escort. The term escort often wasn’t a euphemism for prostitution though. Six leading Japanese steel industry executives required six partners for a long weekend of entertaining their Australian clients. The requirements were high level of education, several changes of evening dress and no smoking. As a number of girls workind for her several establishments were university students, some post-graduate, she was able to put together an impressive group. They were flown first class to Sydney, put up in top hotels and taken out to dinner on a number of occassions. These Japanese gentlemean insisted on buying them jewellery, fur coats etc etc and not once did any of them ask for sex even though it was offered. They returned home with $5,000 cash each (1990’s money) and with their ‘virtue’ intact. However, I was told in no uncertain terms they really had to work hard those three days and nights. I was like sitting for an economics and politics exam and a Miss Australia competition all in one. Hard to do when your hosts are pressing saki on you.
My friend on her first day at the old peoples home ran into a new client. He'd been one of her brothel clients some years before. He took one look at Sue (not here real name) and exclaimed “I didn’t know that service was included”
The downside of prostitution is when the workers are doing it to supply a drug habit or when they’re illegal immigrants kept in slavery by the threat of being exposed to authorities.
    Then there’s male prostitution :-
