I'm a white male with a degree in Chemistry and Biology, therefore; I have a good understanding of affirmitive action, but it sounds like you're an expert, so do tell...
Chemistry and Biology is useless on this topic. Try Law, Ethics, and History. Did you know that it was illegal for black people to own property in your state up until the 1930's? That is why there is Affirmative Action, though we could argue that it's usefulness has waned. But after the reaction to the Voting Rights Act of 1965's repeal, I think there is a discussion to be had to rethink keeping it.
No, you misunderstood me. As a white male with a degree in Chemistry and Biology I have first hand experience with affirmative action. Most of the jobs in science are at Universities, with the State, or the Federal Government and all three use affirmative action to select candidates based on their race and gender. Affirmative action gives one candidate an advantage over another candidate based entirely on their race and gender, in other words, affirmative action is racism. For example, the following excerpt is on the employment page of an institution where I applied for a job: The President of The Evergreen State College, as the delegate of the Board of Trustees, hereby reaffirms that The Evergreen Sate College is steadfastly committed to equal opportunity and diversity as principles necessary for a just society and a quality education. An important goal of the College is to create a learning and working environment that is inclusive, hospitable to, and reflective of our diverse society - an environment that nurtures respect for cultural diversity and encourages excellence. The Evergreen State College is implementing an Affirmative Action program to achieve this goal and to employ and retain members of underrepresented affected groups among its administration, faculty and staff. The College Affirmative Action Plan and programs are established in accordance with regulations promulgated by the Federal Office of Contract Compliance Programs, Federal Executive Order 11246, Rehabilitation Act Section 503, Governor's Executive Order 93-07 Affirming Commitment to Diversity and Equity, Re-establishing Affirmative Action and Prohibiting Discrimination, Governor's Executive Orders 89.01, 96-04 and 98-01, RCW 28 B.10, 39.19, 41.06, 49.60, and 49.74. Consistent with Federal and State law, the plan provides for equal opportunity and non-discrimination in all aspects of college employment regardless of protected group status: race, color, ethnicity, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, or veteran status. The Affirmative Action Plan documents the College’s goals and strategies for the recruitment and retention of well-qualified members of affected groups as staff and faculty, specifically women, Blacks, Hispanics, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, Vietnam Era veterans, disabled veterans and people with disabilities (the affected groups), where they are under-represented in our workforce. The plan does not establish quotas of any kind or timelines for the achievement of goals, but identifies the levels of diversity present in labor markets relevant to College recruitment and establishes those levels as goals the College aspires to in its employment of administrators, staff and faculty. The Affirmative Action Plan also outlines program activities and strategies the College utilize to retain its diverse employees. The President of the College is responsible to the Board of Trustees and to the Evergreen community for implementation of the Affirmative Action Policy, and for recommending the resources necessary to make the policy productive and effective. The Special Assistant to the President for Diversity Affairs is the President's designee responsible for the Affirmative Action Plan and promoting equal opportunity, and is also responsible to provide guidance and support for management’s implementation of the plan. All members of the Evergreen community are required to abide by the provisions of this policy. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination. The addendum attached to this policy contains the college procedures for the implementation of this policy. Copies of this policy are available to the public. The College’s Affirmative Action Plan is available for viewing upon request. For information regarding this policy, contact: The Evergreen State College, Special Assistant to the President for Diversity Affairs:
You're begging the question, because you are presuming "race" in your premise and arriving at "racism" in your conclusion. The argument you SHOULD be making is against the category of race, not against affirmative action.
Where did it sail to? Japanese-Americans rec'd reparations for being put in concentration camps from what 1942-45. Black folks sojourn went well into the 70s and maybe even beyond.
First off, this thread is references to there being some sort of conequences for something one personally has never done. Furthermore, I agree with you. The knockout game issue is something that the black community should not address, but society at large should address.
100 years is more than enough time to blur the lines on who specifically benefited and who did not. That's my point. The time for reparation was decades ago. To do so now would be arbitrary and meaningless. And lets be honest, it took a long time for America to recognize the humanity of a black person, since they did not have a specific "nation" that they ascribed to. White people believed and treated blacks as "former slaves" of their own nation, something that is often ignored by conservatives that use the "my immigrant parents came to this country with nothing..." argument.
Fair enough, and I agree, though I would argue that the "knockout game" is hardly the epidemic right wingers make it out to be.
How many years have black folks been talking about reparations? This is not an issue that just came up 10yrs ago, this goes back as far as 40 acres and a mule. There is no statute of limitations on righting a wrong that has been committed.
It's like when you punish a dog long after he peed on the carpet. The dog doesn't know why it's being punished, it just knows that his enraged owner is angry. My point is rubbing their noses in it 150 years after the deed is meaningless, since the behavior has already been corrected. The time for reparations was immediately after the abolition of slavery. But you could argue that the many racist laws since then are still up for criticism.
Jim Crow segregation didn't end 150 yrs ago. Correcting the crime is one thing, paying restitution for it is another. If you murder someone and you are caught 40yrs later you are still going to be punished for committing the crime. Japanese-Americans rec'd restitution for the wrong that was committed against them 40yrs later. The reparations is not just for the act of slavery, but for all over 400yrs of racism and discrimination that black folks have suffered through.
Well lets see Japanese Americans were given $20K for four years, so what do you think the cost would be for over 400yrs?
What makes you think Japanese were experiencing lower levels of education and income compared to Whites before a fraction received reparations? Please show there was an actual problem before reparations.
We can also note that the APA specifically states that IQ test scores are being misused for nefarious purposes and that an IQ test does not measure "human intelligence" as that is undefined according to the APA. There is no consensus on what "human intelligence" is and a test cannot be constructed to measure something that is undefined. IQ test only provide a prediction of future success related to education and enterprise and don't define human intelligence. They are a very limited tool used for projecting potential outcomes of the person based upon current education and economic systems and have never been a measurement of overall human intelligence. A person with a very high IQ test score, for example, could easily starve to death in the wild because they don't have "intelligence" related to survival skills necessary in the wild. The IQ test doesn't test for intelligence related to survival.
According to who? - - - Updated - - - What does that have to do with JA being put in concentration camps during WWII?
I respect you beginning the bargaining process with such a high asking price. However let me counteroffer: The modern cash value of 40 acres and a mule, per actual slave released from slavery, prorated among their descendants.
Oh, so you weren't arguing 'discrimination' is the reason Blacks fall behind other minorities - because they were discriminated more than others. If not, how were/are Japanese Americans more successful than Whites Americans?
That's all, huh? So what if IQ is positively correlated with income, education levels, life achievement measurements across the board and negatively correlated with criminality and anti-social behavior? We have no idea the correlation between IQ and survival in the wilderness, folks! Let's not jump to any conclusions on the power of the IQ test, yet. Who knows if higher IQ people really have better survival skills than those with poorer ability to reason, motivation or solve problems.
If white men have to pay, how much? And if so, How much do the Egyptians have to pay? They held slaves for FAR longer than the western/white people did. Using racism to punish people because of the racists who existed over 100 years ago. Logic = Flawed.
According to functional efficacy. It has to do with the harm of concentration camps to JA's (if that's what we're calling them) being minimal. Slavery does not correlate to concentration camps. And by shear volume, the cost of compensation would be untenable. What exactly, in 2014, should slave decedents be compensated for this ugly history?
Correlation =/= Causation What is more important is the fact that the APA specifically states that IQ test results are being used for nefarious purposes that don't reflect what the actual IQ tests are measuring or what the test scores represent. This is most significant because this practice is common among those with anti-black racial prejudice to rationalize racism. IQ test scores do not now, nor have they ever, attempted to measure general human intelligence and there are numerous factors other than intelligence that significantly effect the test scores according to the APA. What we can bet on is that anyone using IQ test scores to degrade respect for and/or to stereotype African-Americans or Black people as being less intelligent in general is a racist.
Nope, people regardless of color, gender, race, religions etc etc should not be held accountable for actions of the past. Reparation laws are discriminatory in nature if they do not involve the people directly involved with the crime(WW2 victims, crime victims would be examples of lawful reparation). http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/reparation And to try to say it is a certain races fault as to why another race can not get ahead today is racist. There is no proof that any race today is being held down by another race. Now in the 60's it was true, but times have changed. Is racism gone, nope but racism knows no color, or gender. I'm no fan of the POTUS but he makes some good points in this speech http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2013/05/19/obama-morehouse-college-commencement/2324241/
