In December 2008 my electric rate was just shy of 6 cents per kwh. Today it is just shy of 9 cents per kwh. Now I see where IURC OK'd a 25% rate increase next year and 50% the following year. Indiana has regulated electric rates, but statute allows all expenditures necessary to comply with environmental requirements can be passed directly to rate payers without a hearing. Needless to say, the local air quality has not improved 50% since 2008. Tell us again why electric rates have to skyrocket, Mr. Obama. Thread started at Forum 4 Politics on 04-10-2012 01:18 PM
Makin' electricity from poop... Microbes Produce Electricity from Sewage September 17, 2013 ~ Researchers have devised a way to generate electricity using raw sewage and special bacteria.
Commercial, institutional, and industrial ratepayers in Indiana have been told to expect rates to double again by 2016 - all due to the costs of environmental regulatory compliance.
In Indiana, what, some 90%+ of your electricity is generated by coal? Obama has already answered your question years ago. Illinois voted for him in 2 Presidential elections, so you are getting what you were promised, therefore knew was coming, and voted for it. Enjoy the consequences of your freedom here in America. “If someone wants to build a new coal-fired power plant they can, but it will bankrupt them because they will be charged a huge sum for all the greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.” -Candidate Barack Obama, 2008. And just think, the higher the cost of electricity becomes, the more money all those energy efficient devices will "save" us. Private utility companies have been granted a monopoly by the government. In many cases, state governments are approving huge rate hikes so the utility company can pay for various projects designed to "reduce energy consumption". These projects include the utility company subsidizing the cost of "energy efficient" appliances to customers, and heavily subsidizing spiral CFL bulbs in local stores, in addition to handing free ones out. States have essentially turned electric rates into yet another form of taxation to fund their environmental schemes. One of my family members was recently offered a special promotion by the utility company to trade in her old refrigerator for a new "more efficient" one. The cost to her was only a tiny fraction of what the new refrigerator actually cost. Of course, what she did not realize was that she was still paying for it through higher electric rates.
Of course. Works like a charm, comparing something expensive to something cheaper. All it takes is creating the differential. I am glad that Obama told us what he was going to do in advance, but it seems as though more people like this scheme than dislike it. Oh well. In a representative government, you get what you deserve.
Most people are not aware that the price of electricity is being jacked up to pay for someone else's new refrigerator, or to keep the prices low on those spiral CFL bulbs being sold in their local stores. People shouldn't have to keep track of these things. When various different organizations and levels of government are controlling so much in our lives, potentially everything becomes politicized, and it obfuscates the important issues. How many people even realize that the reason their clothes take twice as long to wash is because of government-mandated "efficiency" requirements on their new washer they bought? When the local utility subsidizes things, where do you think all that money comes from?
Most people are stupid, and don't know where their gasoline, electricity, or food comes from. You can hardly blame the ignorant for being ignorant, they choose to be that way, nod politely in their direction and let them be I always figured. My entire point. They don't "think", therefore, they never even ask the question in the first place.
