I can say my family members were raped and murdered by Chinese military a long time ago. Do I deserve compensation or an apology.
What the African American community actually must deal with is the legacy of slavery. Will a cash payout change that or inflame it?

If you don't believe you deserve compensation or an apology, then no you don't.
The African-American community has dealt with the legacy of slavery since April 1865. Reparations are not about trying to "change or inflame" anything. Reparations are about compensating the descendants of African slaves for their unpaid labor and bondage.
I hope this answers your questions. :)

I don't know that getting back pay for your ancestors 164 years ago will change anything. What the black community needs is a change in social structure that changes the legacy of slavery. That means working on the cycle of poverty. That means dropping barriers to the accumulation of wealth. That means more black people engaged in politics.

You are so right. Reparations will help African-Americans to do all the things you suggest.
    1) Reparations will help break the cycle of poverty.
    2) Reparations will help African-Americans accumulate wealth.
    3) Reparations will enable more African-Americans to be active in politics.

Thank you for pointing these things out.

That prolly depends whether those advocating for reparations claim the civil war was about slavery or not. If it was, then objectively, those union lives lost can be deducted from the reparations total (and we'll then start having to figure out the dollar value of a union soldiers life in the 1860s). If they don't want those deaths figured in, it can only be because the civil war wasn't about slavery.

Out of curiosity do claims for reparation for historic acts of slavery extend to those African nations occupying areas where precolonial tribes and petty kingdoms were complicit in the slave trade? You know - those locations on the East and West Coast of the continent where local kingdoms/tribal associations on-sold members of other tribal/ethnic groups they seized in raids in the hinterland and then brought down to the coast for sale to white traders. Places like Zanzibar and such.

Or is the argument that only Europeans need to pay compensation because slavery as an institution is OK if practiced by Arabic, Africans and other (non-white) polities.

We would insult many black Americans by putting a price on the suffering of their ancestors.

This is a form of a stimulus payment, this doesn't get anyone out of poverty. By any means.

Instead of solving problems, everyone will fight over money. It will end up only being about the money. This is not how to help our nation resolve a wrong doing. This is basically hush money.

Who is seriously considering this? Do they really think this would ever pass?
When will we finally put this 'idea' (a term it hardly merits) where it belongs?
For one last time, any possible 'reparations' were paid with the mothers' sons who died to end the error.

One example of wealth accumulation is purchasing a house. For most it is the single largest purchase of a lifetime and is the most substantial contributor to a person's overall wealth that can be passed down to generations. 42% of African American own their homes, whites 72% do, a 30% difference. Romania has the highest home ownership in the world. They did that through a government sponsored first time homeowners program which required little down payment and the government backed the loan.

I strongly disagree with every point you made. But, thank you anyway.

none of those descendants were ever slaves, so they can not get reparations for such. I have never owned another human being. I can not be held responsible for someone elses crimes, nor can I be made to compensate someone who wasn't injured, for something I didn't do.

Sadly, a history of redlining and disparity in the home loan sector affects African-American homeownership.
African-Americans have been shut out of many wealth producing activities because of racism.
Reparations are a fair way to help correct this ugly history.
Thank you for shining a light on these historical wrongs.

If every African American were poor you would have a point...but since they are not, you could not be more wrong. You just ignored every successful person in this country of every color and race with that statement.

What are you talking about? When we had a lot of Democrats running, 5 of the candidates running for President supported reparations, and none of them said absolutely not. This is a mainstream idea in the Democratic Party and is likely to end up in the party platform.

Just putting it out there, but this sounds like an awfully confederate response...

every American today regardless of race is just as responsible for Americas past - we are all Americans equally

many people white and black gave their lives and livelihood to free the slaves, that is what current Americans can claim as a victory, the Confederates lost

if most Americans had a dna test, they would find most of us are mutts and have many races in us

many now are doing dna tests that are white skinned to prove they should get certain benefits

remember, Obama is half white, even though his skin is darker.... don't go by looks

have to go by dna if reparations are involved as they would be white peoples ancestors too, and some black people would not have them as ancestors

and of course many would also have ancestors that were slave owners, due to slave owners having children with slaves, should they also get reparations?

it does get complicated - and I think it's too late to address this, it should of been addressed in the past, it's a shame it was not

affirmative action was a form of reparations would you not agree

the best we can do going forward is help the poor regardless of race, support equality, and try to be better than past generations

try to end all racism, regardless if it's a white that is racist or a black that is racist, all racism is bad and should be called out

the reality is, America is close to going bankrupt, and if we did give out a $17 trillion stimulus in the name of reparations, it would only be because Trump knew it would be worthless as it would be the straw the broke America's back and would probably start a race war as well as bankrupt the country

The wealth of African-Americans compared to the wealth of Whites proves me right.
The main reason Whites have more accumulated wealth is because they benefit from generational wealth transfers. African-American parents and grandparents haven't been able to help their descendants in the same way.
    REASON: Racism.

And there is nothing that can be done about such. No amount of monetary payout is going to change the current situation, so there is no point in discussing the notion of reparations any further.

That would be beyond our control wouldn't it? Bankruptcy. Race war. Both would be very tragic.
To try to end all racism is a noble goal. But, I don't expect to see that in my lifetime. How would you go about ending racism? What
new laws/rules would you put in place?

Wrong. Something can be done about it. Reparations. That will change the current situation. I intend to continue discussing reparations. Sorry if you don't approve.

agree, and reparations will not end racism either, and it is not possible... thus affirmative action was the reparations solution

whites that are racist against blacks will always exist, just as blacks that are racist against whites will, but they are a minority, and we can not give them power, we all have to be against racism

My daughter gave me a DNA test kit for Christmas. I found out 80% of my ancestry is West African and 20% European. I also found out my first enslaved ancestors landed in Virginia around 1700.
My great-grandfather was born on a Mississippi plantation in 1854. So, I have proof of my enslaved ancestors. A few years ago I had an email correspondence with a man who was a distant relative of the family who owned my great-grandfather. He was able to share some information with me.
It is not too late to address who should receive reparations.

I disagree, reparations will not solve anything, the time for reparations was when the actual victims were alive

how are you gonna determine which Americans get reparations, the color of their skin? dna? will they have to prove they are a decedent of a slave? each slave gets so much and it's divided equally among every decedent regardless of the race of that decedent?
