The alternative to Assad is a number of bands which are led by cannibals and Al Kayeda. Assad is not the best man in the world and he truely is a dictator but he is much better then these guys. Check on Youtube about what is happening there.
Next. Russia sells to Assad a system, which can effectively shoot down enemy planes. The "rebels", which I call bandits, with all my respect don't have any serious aircraft. But some countries around (and not necessarily that near) have and are really up to come to Syria with some bombs. So, this was a case of a best buy. Right on time. This weapon will help Syria to protect itself.
Besides, at the moment the bandits all over are nearly defeated. They are concentrated at the borders of the US allies where they receive the weapons and people to continue their struggle against Assad.

So there is no question of why Russia sells protective weapons to Syria's legal ruler (although this ruler is the same dictator as in Turkey, or Saudi Arabia). There is a question of why you dare to tell that russians are careless about people around the world? You believe those politicians who dare to regret that Syria is able to protect itself and that it woill be difficult to have another (of numerous wars) war there and to take another bunch of oil from a country like to take a sweet from a baby's cradle. You believe that a number of people who eat heart of perished enemy (without even boiling it) are a better alternative to an elected president! Well, I know you don't trust that these elections reflect the people's opinion, but that's your problem, which doesn't change a fact. And now you should just accept that all this blood which was and still will be in Lybia, Syria, Afghanistan etc is concentrated at the tip of your tongue and tips of your fingers typing your responsibility off to another country, which being much weaker tries to stop the world from a complete collapse due to true dictatorship. What was this poem of USA propaganda? You are the one responsible? Yeah. Something like that.

    1. Did you see what happed in Libya? Did they bring Kaddafi to court? Did you see how he died? Is this western democracy? They bombed his palacies. Did they just wanted him dead?
    2. US is a puppet of the Israel. Syria is an enemy of Israel. All these rebels are supported by US. US doesn't really care who they are. It's just interested in weakening Syria. US doesn't care what happens with people of Syria, how many of them will be killed in internal wars between these rebel groups. Russia does care about bloodshed and future disintegration of Syria, like what happened in all Arabic coutures, which were attacked by US. All these US-lead wars doesn't do any good to people of these countries. Iraq is a good example too. Where are weapons of mass destruction?
    3. Addad is a head of a legitimate government.

Basically, summarizing all, Russia doesn't believe to "democratic west" anymore. "West" looks more like gang of bandits with a good face.
