Figured I'd start a thread where people could post songs and/or lyrics from songs that have touched them or in some way have an emotional or personal connection with your life. Could be happy, sad, angry, exciting, whatever. My pick is sad, but that doesn't have to be case for anyone else who posts. Write about any song that has personal meaning to you, regardless of what emotions it invokes. My first post here is for The Rose by Bette Midler. This song for me relates directly to my mother. She used to be asked to sing this song sometimes at various friend and family weddings, and I remember she loved Bette Midler in general. It's one of the first songs I can remember hearing and remembering. My mother passed away unexpectedly in 2007 of an aneurysm. That weekend is a blur, partially because that night(we found her in the morning) I went out and got really drunk. I had to, and it may have been selfish, but I couldn't be around the rest of my family right then. It was too much. I couldn't even handle my own emotions and feelings, and everyone else's I just wasn't ready to handle. Sunday morning came and I hadn't cried yet, but I knew how and when I would. It was going to be this song. I came home and put it on repeat and let it all out. I haven't cried like that since I was a child. In fact, just listening to the song again today made me teary eyed. It used to be one of my favorite songs, and still is, but I tend to avoid it now. In any case, even without the emotional attachment I have to it, I would still consider it to be possibly the greatest ballad ever written, musically, vocally, and lyrically. I'm gonna paste the lyrics here, because even the lyrics alone I think are a masterpiece. Some say love, it is a river That drowns the tender reed Some say love, it is a razor That leaves your soul to bleed Some say love, it is a hunger An endless aching need I say love, it is a flower And you, its only seed It's the heart, afraid of breaking That never learns to dance It's the dream, afraid of waking That never takes the chance It's the one who won't be taken Who cannot seem to give And the soul, afraid of dying That never learns to live When the night has been too lonely And the road has been too long And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong Just remember in the winter Far beneath the bitter snow Lies the seed That with the sun's love, in the spring Becomes the rose
well, this is kind of different. In general things were not good. One day on my way home while trying to find a yard sale, I ended up in a neighborhood that I hadn't seen before. It had just rained and everything was really green, gorgeous flowers, trees, winding roads, the occasional steep hill.. lovely old neighborhood and SRV's Little Wing came on the radio. I just drove around had a great time, nothing else existed. always reminds me of that day.
INXS - Afterglow Here I am, lost in the light of the moon that comes through my window Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses It's you and the roses Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow Heal me from all this sorrow As I let you go I will find my way when I see your eyes Now I'm living in your afterglow
Lateralus - Tool An absolutely beautiful song, I get teary eyed when I just open myself to it and embrace it.
Mike and the Mechanics came out with their song "In the Living Years" about a week before my mom died so that song always makes me cry and brings back memories. Thankfully my mom and I had a good relationship and I this song makes me so glad that I took the time to talk to her for hours and hours through the years! I would put the lyrics but I'm on a new laptop and haven't gotten used to how to things with Windows 8. - - - Updated - - - Greatest ballad followed closely by: Wind Beneath my Wings.
The watershed moment of these guys' career that made some lifelong fans and alienated others entirely. This came out at a really rough period in my life and was exactly what I needed at the time. This entire album is like a religious experience to me. Every time I listen to it, I get sucked into another world. It's one of those albums that's hard to listen to one track at a time. You have to listen to it all the way through from beginning to end. But this song right here - the last one on the album - is the apex. For obvious reasons. There came a time when I understood that being a man required something more than looking good, acting strong, and pretending to listen. Regret and redemption follow, and accepting weaknesses are a path to growth and beauty.
Led Zeppelin - Ten Years Gone Helps me get through hard times and remember that it's easier to go out and do something more. And it is very very possible. Leave the past behind you and focus ahead. Trampled by Turtles - Blue Skies and the Devil A song about home, love, and heart ache. I've been listening to a lot lately. It's a good story.
This thread has been around for quite some time but I just noticed it and the title caught my attention. Yes, most of us have songs that we relate to personally and I have many but I thought I'd start by posting one with special meaning. Just over a year ago my older brother passed away and his favorite musician had been Jimi Hendrix since the 1960's. Of special meaning to him was the song "Stone Free" and he even had that title painted on one of his motorcycle racing helmets. Of course it's also a great song about liberty that bikers relate to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBJAp3rzl0g Every day in the week, I'm in a different city If I stay too long, people try to pull me down They talk about me like a dog Talk about the clothes I wear But they don't realize They're the ones who's square Hey, that's why, you can't hold me down I don't wanna be down I gotta move on Stone free, to do what I please Stone free to ride the breeze Stone free, I can't stay I got to, got to, got to get away, yeah Alright, listen to this baby A woman here, a woman there Try to keep me in a plastic cage But they don't realize, it's so easy to break Oh but sometimes I get a high I can feel my heart kind of runnin' hot That's when and I got to move before I get caught Hey, that's why, listen to me, baby You can't hold me down I don't wanna be tied down I gotta be free I said, stone free, to do what I please Stone free, to ride the breeze Stone free, I can't stay I got to, got to, got to get away, yeah Tear me loose, baby Yeah, I said Stone free, to ride the breeze Stone free, to do what I please Stone free, I can't stay Stone free, I got to, got to get away Stone free [Incomprehensible] Stone free, don't try to over react Stone free, I go on down the highway, yeah Stone free, no no no no Stone free, yeah, bye bye, baby Stone free
