Suspected Russian spy was well-liked by classmates, but something just seemed a little off

Washington (CNN)Victor Muller's accent just didn't sound right.

The man now alleged to be a Russian spy was studying at the prestigious Johns Hopkins' School of Advanced International Studies, an elite graduate program favored by US military personnel, young diplomats and, sources say, future spies.

Gregarious, smart, and often seen toting a helmet for his beloved motorcycle, "Muller" was known, and even liked, by his fellow students and the faculty at SAIS. But his muddled accent caught the ear of a few classmates. On one occasion, a fellow student asked him outright: Are you Russian?

The spy brushed off the question. He was from Brazil, he said in what turned out to be part of the elaborate cover identity he spent years building.

It seems that Russian spies are really into Ducati motorcycles. The article links to this video of his:

He does have a pretty thick accent. Gets me thinking. It would be interesting to hear what a few of the allegedly American posters here sound like.

WOW, perhaps it's the Russian who made America vote for Trump in 2016? :eyepopping:

Yeah...noticeable accent....seems a hint of Russian. Yes....I've heard Russkis like Ducatis...

Yeah...it would be handy to have a voice option here at PF.....typing messages is time consuming!:))

For most Mafiosi spies it's a case of "spek eengleesh as qveck as porsible"....when going into Western hemisphere countries...when I hear that word "porsible" ...my ear perks up....that's an indicator of Russian or Slavic emphasis...

And now for some news from the War Front:

The last stronghold of the Ukrainians in the Lugansk Oblast has fallen and the Russians have occupied the mine and plant north of the city. The numerous Ukrainian forces failed to break the Russian encirclement and their attempt to escape was crushed by the Russian counterattack.

Russian Paratroopers have entered the city and their troops are advancing in districts of Lisichansk where fierce street battles are taking place. Lisichansk was the last resistance center of the Kiev troops in the Lugansk People's Republic. Upon its capture, the entire territory of Lugansk will finally be free.

In the meantime more than eight hundred Ukrainians have surrendered to Russian forces on the outskirts of Lisithansk, and the inhabitants of the city are preparing to welcome the Russians as liberators. This has "shocked" the French journalists. When an evacuation order was given to the inhabitants of the city so the Ukrainians could use their apartments as fortified positions, they refused to do so.

They have even told French journalists "that it is the Ukrainian Army that is killing us." This surprised the French since they were told that it wasn't true that 45% of the population has Russian roots and a Russian national consciousness.

Maybe he is Russian and I suppose an accent can be successfully disguised, but my point is that he did not sound Russian. That accent is hard to place, which could be because he trying to disguise it.

It wasn't the Russians who caused Americans to vote for Trump it was Hillary. People went to the polls in huge numbers to vote against her.

That's a good thing I ride a Kawasaki and have no accent!

In my humble opinion Ducatis are highly overrated!

I mean, it's established at this point that he is Russian. He's been positively identified.

I can also hear the Russian accent, based on my personal experience. He was certainly trying to disguise it, but even people he went to school with who would know were able to identify it. It's probably at least partly why he was caught.

If one listens carefully enough for a Russki accent...you can detect it.

    One is letter pronunciation....

    Example...."V" as in "w"
    Seven....sewen
    Eleven....elewen
    Vote....wote
    Victor....wictor....and other examples.

What the hell do you ride?
Hardly rideables are also overrated. Cost too much and need maintenance every time you turn around.

If I was going to ride an American bike it would be an Indian. You can't go wrong with the big four from Japan. parts and service are everywhere and reliability is superb

How do you know he's not a Ukrainian pretending to be a Russian to make them look bad?

I highly doubt that.... On both fronts.
People who drive cars love to hate on bikers. It's like they're pissed off that you're enjoying the freedom that they're afraid to embrace because with freedom always comes a certain amount of risk.

I come to think of it certain prominent Democrats love to have Chinese spies drive them around in cars for a couple of decades. Mr Mr and Mrs America turn in your guns comes to mind

Well, I don't hate bikers. In fact, I respect them. At least the patriotic ones who ride American bikes.

And I'm sure you make sure that everything that you drive or consume or using your household as American made because you're a true patriot right?

Durandal - I notice that they wrote 'alleged' spy which immediately makes the whole thing hogwash. But then again it is CNN.

Being Russian is no more cause to suspect they're a spy than being Muslim is cause to suspect they're a terrorist.

I believe I mentioned about accents....nothing about "spies".
