"Some have turned federal informant. Others are facing prison time. More are named in looming lawsuits. All of them are fighting.

Last summer, the American alt-right was presenting itself as a threatening, unified front, gaining national attention with a deadly rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The collection of far-right and white nationalist groups proclaimed victory after President Donald Trump hesitated to directly condemn them and instead blamed “both sides” and the “alt left” for the violence. But less than a year after Charlottesville, the alt-right is splintering in dramatic fashion as its leaders turn on each other or quit altogether.

Matthew Heimbach’s arrest in a March trailer park brawl with members of his neo-Nazi group—some of whom he was allegedly screwing—felt like a too-obvious metaphor. Heimbach was the head of the Traditionalist Worker Party, a youth-focused white supremacist group that floated to the front of media coverage and hate rallies in the run-up to Donald Trump’s election.

But by March, Heimbach and the TWP had spent the previous months embroiled in a series of online spats with other alt-right factions. On March 14, police in his Indiana hometown arrested Heimbach after he allegedly assaulted TWP spokesperson Matthew Parrott during a fight over their wives, both of whom Heimbach was allegedly sleeping with. Heimbach’s wife is Parrott’s stepdaughter.

The high-profile bust was an accelerant in what had been a slow-burning feud among the alt-right. Heidi Beirich, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project, said the schism started after Unite the Right, a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last August. The rally turned deadly after a man affiliated with a white supremacist group plowed a car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one and injuring more.

“I think the splintering started there, but I have to say what happened in the last couple weeks has been at a much higher level,” Beirich told The Daily Beast on Wednesday.

Threats from the far-right are by no means over. The SPLC recently released a map documenting 954 hate groups in the U.S., a rise in 20 percent since 2014. In a January report, the Anti-Defamation League found that white supremacists had killed 18 people in 2017.

But the alt-right has had a bad month. In recent weeks, as Beirich described, prominent white supremacist Richard Spencer has dropped a lawsuit against Kent State University and canceled his speaking tour, after anti-fascist protesters opposed him at every stop. “Antifa is winning,” Spencer conceded in a video. Days earlier, Kyle Bristow, an alt-right lawyer who has represented Spencer, announced he was quitting the movement after the Detroit Free Press wrote an article critical of him."

As the Alt-Right neo Nazis gear up for their last gasp "United The Right" rally where they will appeal for "White Civil Rights", their movement is falling to pieces. Read the full article to see how an extremist movement shambles to bits.

Not sure if anyone will remember Sargent Schultz from the sitcom Hogan's Hero's but - there is a bit of a resemblance to Heir Donald.

"The Alt-Left" is what the Nazis call the rest of America. Sure you really want to use that term bro?

    Good.

The alt right is just leftist identity politics applied to whites.

    It should crash and burn.

Well I agree, the White Supremacist Movement is a molehill. Has been since the fall of the Klan in the 1930s.

The alt-right (neo-nazis) are socialists with white identitarian political ideologies. Only because they are white with the exact same economic strategy as many of the democrat elected officials is why the media considers them "right wing". They think that just because they work based on race, everyone else does to, which is also a key tenet of the left (projections). The alt-right (white identitarian leftists) thought they could take over the GOP with their shake up with Trump, but the right doesn't want racial identitarians in their group. The right, especially the right-lite, want economics to be at the forefront of political ideology.

Right, cause the extremist on the left are actually accepted and condoned on the left, and aren't shunned like the neo-nazis and Richard Spencer is by the right. Glad to see you accept ANTIFA as your brown shirts.

    "Shunned" by the Right?

The Nazis themselves are unpredictable and unstable social contrarians getting arrested in trailer parks, but their racism and extremist conspiracy theories are now the lifeblood of the Right.

    Nice try.

The alt-left, made up of hard core socialist progressives is proving it's flash in the pan creds.

No matter how hard ThinkProgress, HuffPo, DailyKos, OccupyDemocrats, CNN, MSNBC, etc., try to lie and manipulate, the Nation is noticing the threat Progressivism represents.

Nope, that's why they are "alt" and not "the" right. You already said it yourself, ANTIFA is not "ALT", they are "the" left. Spencer is not praised by any right wing political official. No actions of his group is being praised by the right. Those who started the "alt" moniker for the alt-right have abandoned it since Spencer took it over and now call themselves the right-lite. Everything about Spencer's group is left wing, except that they're white identitarians, which gets them shunned from the left and other SJWs. If they had all their beliefs but were for blacks or women or latinos, they'd be right in the mix and fully accepted by the left. Everything that Spencer's group stands for is opposed by the right.

Just responding to your comments about the alt-left.

The fact some thousands of idiots in the so called alt-right are falling apart was a forgone conclusion. They were just a bogey man the left's bigoted media partners created to smear anyone not in their camp.

And the alt-left is not made up of a bunch of Hipster Kids. It's the new Democratic Party. Who do you think voted for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York?

Most people on the right applaud this scenario. But do you think this will stop Trump being reelected since most people don't associate with the ideals of what Richard Spencers group holds?

It wont matter cause they are a small fraction of people who voted for Trump. And Trump hasn't invited them to the WH in any manor to discuss their view points. Spencer's group is nothing in the world of politics except for the leftist media to use to drum up fear and hate for the right.

Supported by more than just Hipster Kids.

As to projections, that remains to be seen. Millennials are not very dependable. Given the scorched earth violent actions of the New Democratic Party, I think the ballot box will likely be filled from votes by everyday Americans who are repulsed by the policies the New Democratic Party endorses.

There are some lefties who wouldn't actually participate in those things. But you're correct, those far left groups dominate left of center American politics.
