This upcoming Sunday--November 9--marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the destruction of the infamous Berlin Wall, that divided East Germany from West Germany, prior to its unification as a single country.

This historic event was surely emblematic of the end of the Cold War.

They are going to have a celebration in Germany that day and Gorbachev is going to give a speech where he is defending Putin against the West.

The demolition of the Berlin Wall was the real end of communism in Eastern Europe. It is really ridiculous that Poles claim they were first to abolish the communistic reign. It is simple and plain untrue and very dishonest from their part.

Germany was the first country to bring down the communism.

    Well, I dunno.

Poland effectively put an end to communist rule on April 5, 1989: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contract_Sejm

This was more than eight months prior to the demolition of the Berlin Wall in Germany...

You know, you cannot say that Poland effectively put the end to the communist rule in April 1989. The Parliament that constituted in 1989 was only in a small part elected in a democratic way. The majority of MPs were communists who only wanted to be considered democrats. The country was still controlled by Moscow - at least until 1993. Also, what's more - still there are some who claim that Poland has never come out of the Russia's sphere of influence. Taking into consideration what is happening there - for instance now, with regard to municipal elections 2014' - there might be a lot of truth in it, I suppose.

Besides, demolishing the wall is a very symbolic and powerful event. Poles cannot point to such a symbolic event when they try to convince everyone they were first. They simply weren't and that's their main problem.

So, finally I would stick to what I said above, namely that Germany was first to totally abolish communist rule.

Germany deserved the occupations as it was responsible for WW1 and WW2. Eastern European countries didn't.

Lol, West Germany was taken under US wing with its Marshal aid and considerably high spending compare to its GDP at the time. It buoyed them up, with all kinds of other aid.

German bumped US debt to colossal levels after the war.. - what a paradox.

Germany should have been treated like Roosevelt wanted.. as an occupied country rather than as an independent aid-needing country... and bash it about a bit.

All that key information is buried away from the naïve, ignorant and knowledge lacking public. It is not easy to bring the public over to your point of you..but what the Soviet union did to East German was justice.
