Gawd, I can't believe the Derby is already here. I'll be dropping everything at 6:24pm this Saturday. :)

Definitely the best 2 minutes in sports. Will we finally get a Triple Crown winner this year?

Thoroughbred racing fans are waaaaaaay past due, yepdone. I'm still sore to this day over how Kent Desormeaux cost Real Quiet the Triple Crown in '98.

What strikes me as somewhat strange is that I thought breeders and trainers were going to try and produce stronger horses with more endurance, but I'm not seeing that in some of the horses in this field. It's little wonder we haven't seen a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed...

This should be a great Derby. There's some good speed in the race, and a couple good closers too. Several competitors are unbeaten. It will be a tough call, and it may well come down to "class". Verrazano is unbeaten and favored, but his pace isn't the best in the field (Goldencents). That could be because Verrazano only does what he has to do to win?? Revolutionary is training very well, and Goldencents and Orb look good too. I can't count out Itsmyluckyday nor Normandy Invasion either. If there is a Triple Crown winner in this field, we'd be hard pressed to decide who it is at this point. I think we'll all need some luck to pick this one right. :confusion:

I like what I've seen from Goldencents coming out of the gate. If you get stuck in traffic in the Derby you're toast...

Several of these horses have some real nice bloodlines, most notably Revolutionary who is a descendant of Seattle Slew (Revolutionary will have Calvin Bo-Rail at the reins on Saturday).

War Pass, Into Mischief, and the best turf horse that I have personally seen race, Kitten's Joy, have multiple offspring in this year's Derby:

I agree. Goldencents has nailed a first 1/4 mile in under 23, and he finshes in strong quarters. Has one of the better times in the field at 1 1/8 miles too. He will be very competitive, no doubt. It will be a crowded field, and his early speed could be important. I haven't pick my horse yet, but Goldencents is among those who could get my money. I think there's an outside shot this year to get another Derby under 2 minutes.

    That would be great. :)

I just got through watching Revolutionary's victory in the Withers Stakes (below), and it was pretty impressive. He came from last place to win and had to navigate through a lot of traffic. He looks like a real nice "touch button" horse that will be able to handle the stampede-like conditions in the Derby, and I think he's a perfect match for Calvin Bo-Rail.

Racing fans got spoiled in the seventies, with 3 triple crown winners, including back to back. Who would have figured we'd go this long without another. It was interesting to see that there have only been 11 triple crown winners & that it was 25 years between Citation (in '48) & Secretariat.
I'm going with Revolutionary & Orb - one, two.

    Triple crown info

    My pick (Revolutionary) finished third.

Orb looked pretty impressive. It looked like he could have given his jockey more and he was really energetic after the race.

From what I've read, the Preakness might be Orb's toughest test. Evidently, he's more suited for longer races, like the Derby and the Belmont. We'll find out in a couple weeks...

We sure did get spoiled in the 70's. I don't think we'll ever see another horse like Big Red...
