I guess I'm just a softie. Although I really did not have a dog in this particular hunt (as the old aphorism goes), I favored Louisville in tonight's National Championship Game. That is because one of its players broke a leg a week ago, during the Sweet Sixteen, thereby making it harder for Louisville to go all the way. Still, when it was all over, I saw Michigan's freshman guard, Spike Albrect, weeping. And it really got to me. As one of the commentators mentioned during the game, Albrecht--who seldom gets much playing time--had averaged only 1.8 points per game during the regular season. Yet he came off the bench in the first half tonight, and tallied an incredible 17 points before the halftime buzzer, including an astounding five-for-five from three-point range. (And some of these shots appeared to be from the next area code.) He had played fabulously. Yet his team had still lost. It was rather sad, really...
