As far as I can tell this was a latino gang hit to get weapons. There was no way that the father could stop it.

They are trained killers.

And don't forget that if the homeowner has a gun when the police come a calling then that is suicide by cop.

There certainly was a way for him to stop it. But he was unarmed when violence visited itself upon him and his family.

I don't see why you can't both acknowledge both issues exist. It isn't one or the other. The partisan polarization is I think the main l problem here.

 

How much gun control is enough?

 

Not that an escaped criminal can just walk into a gun store and buy a machine gun - that's not the issue.
Not that a mentally disturbed person can get a hand gun at a gas station - that's not the issue

So when America makes it illegal for criminals to escape and mental people to walk around the streets we won't have a mass murder problem.

That's true, unfortunately. It's happened with 'tolerance to gays' and 'women's rights' and 'right to die for terminally ill and suffering people.'

But so too has the gun issue - now we have 18 year olds walking around the streets with machine guns - that wasn't supposed to happen.

We can CONTROL guns without taking away people's rights to guns.
ie registered weapons, courses in gun management, background checks etc.. Hell, try getting a license to drive a school bus like I did, and see what you go through.

Again, look at Britain. You have the right to a gun. But it's treated as a serious responsibility. Committ a crime with a gun and the courts won't focus on the crime but the gun - fifteen years max jail for the gun. It's working a treat for the English.

 

no you do not have a RIGHT. you are allowed to own a gun Now-but not handguns, not semi auto rifles etc. It is a privilege that the subjects are currently allowed to have. This isn't England. I respect your argument about the 'incremental' aspect of gun control - it's real, 'mission creep' is another example of this.
But the right to a gun is in the constitution - no-one can ban guns without changing that. This is different to other social issues where once someone got their foot in the door it was game over.
At the very least enable strict licensing procures. If you have a mental issue, or been involved in a crime over the past five years, belong to a street gang, or there's some domestic dispute etc then why are you allowed to have a gun?

 

It's the same as Australia. You have to have a pretty good reason to own a hand gun here. And like England you probably have to be in a gun club or something - otherwise, WHY would you want one? What's wrong with having a rifle or shotgun if you want to hunt? Hand guns aren't going to win any war, against your own elected government or the Chinese.

 

You do realize he probably could have killed that family without that type of gun, or even without the use of a gun?

Of course the race and gun state correlate. The findings confirm that instead of merely blaming someone else and thinking your hands are cleaner than someone else's , you should ACT on the social problems that fuel the problems. And that won't happen because of the racism inhérent in policing which augments black people's feeling that they like you need to protect themselves.
The blame doesnt rest in the stats. The blame also rests in the reason for those stats.
