Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley issued stunning remarks breaking with former President Trump, telling Politico in an interview published Friday that she believes he "let us down." The right wing darling is going against Trump. Can she win without his base or is she giving up politics? Nikki Haley breaks with Trump: 'We shouldn't have followed him' (msn.com)
Nikki Haley understands that this is the one and only shot at ridding the GOP from Trump. There will be a political backlash, but it's the last opportunity to rip off the band aid. If they don't, they will remain slaves to Trump from this moment on. They will have no option but remain loyal to him, knowing that Trump will NOT remain loyal to them and can throw them under the bus at any moment. Nikki Haley has no chance of winning in 2024. But she has an excellent shot at 2028 if the GOP breaks with Trump NOW.
I agree, if the GOP can't rid itself of the MAGA disease, they will end up with a split party as the more sane Republicans either go Independent or try and set up a new centrist party.
If there were a significant number of thinking people, who used to vote Republican or Democrat, who got together, something different might happen in American politics. They could either take over one side of the duopoly or form a viable alternative.
The Republican party has been split into 2 factions since at least 1980; maybe 2.2 factions since 2016.
I wonder how the GOP will censor or punish her for speaking her mind. It's odd the far right thinks the left has one singular mind but when anyone dares question their king they threaten then with being primaried. How dare they speak their minds.
Hmm... So is this you, here and now denigrating democrats for their own build back better BS? Hard to tell.
Keep in mind that Trump’s policy positions were popular with Republicans, Independents, and even some Democrats. He lost the election in part because of his personality and in part because of his statements about Covid. Those two things sunk him. So if the Republicans put up a candidate in 2024 who is respectful and well-spoken and likable, but who has the same policy positions as Trump, look out. You should not think of the 2020 election as a win for a pro-Democrats, pro-Biden, pro-liberal agenda. Instead, it was a rejection of Trump, the man. The big swing was with Independents, (30% of the electorate), and they could easily swing right back the other way if the Democrats overreach and if the Republicans put up a likable candidate.
Why push a demonstrably false narrative? I mean lie about it of course. The question was about your statist support not anyone else's so why did you try to change the subject?
She has to make a pitch for those in the middle who recognize Trump's betrayal but she isn't exactly being vehement in her criticism. Wasn't just a few weeks ago when she said to give the guy a break? "The base" must continue to be appeased by not telling the truth to them.
I didn't see many policy positions. It was basically four years of "whatever Obama did, let's do the opposite". So... yeah... anybody who hated Obama loved him. But that's not enough to carry just anybody to the presidency. The positions that carried Trump to the presidency would sink any other candidate: torturing children to dissuade people to apply for refugee status. Separate us from our allies in Europe. Lobby against climate change mitigation efforts. Entice white supremacists and other extreme right groups... I think Trump would have lost, covid or no covid. Covid just gave democrats an easy message. But they would have won based on the Mueller Report and the Senate Intelligence Report findings alone. So, the next GOP candidate will be either a pro-Trump nut, who will lose because... they are not Trump. Or a never-Trumper who will lose because Trump will be attacking them. Likable by whom? They are either likable by Trump, or their likable by never-Trumpers. You can't have it both ways. And certainly not in 2024. A sitting President has an enormous advantage in our political system. And Biden (or Harris) would have to do a job as lousy as Trump's to not get re-elected. They could be underwater in popularity, but they'll win anyway.
Why are so many of you folks on the left so shady with your words? "The great REPUBLICAN SPLIT"? are you kidding me? How is that even accurate? Did she switch parties or something? She just voiced her opinion on a matter concerning Trump. We are allowed to talk trash about our own here on the right because we believe in free speech and individuality, 2 things the left HATES!
I'm not so sure...........which is the most damning indictment of American voters anyone could suggest. The most dishonest, immoral, ignorant, corrupt, person ever to hold high office could actually have been re-elected. We'll never know.
Most never-Trumpers couldn’t stand his personality - the chaos, the tweets, etc. But most of the policy positions - taxes, immigration, regulations, energy independence, standing up to China on trade, and others, resonated with rank and file moderates and conservatives. You mark my words. Your job over the next four years is to tread lightly and don’t overreach. If you don’t, and the Republicans put up a respectful, well qualified, likable candidate, you risk losing the Independents, and you can’t win without them.
I don’t know? if you listen to Trump and many others that post right here, the hardcore Trumpers seem to want to be rid of”RINO’s” or anyone else that disagrees with dear leader. You can almost see them frothing at the mouth if you go against Trump. I’m a lifelong Republican, but can no longer maintain my self respect if Trump is the leader. The party seems pretty F’d to me. As long as Trump is the leader, the Republicans will be forever relegated to a second class and second place party.
