Found this on r/coolguides and thought it a great snapshot of the various time proven techniques of marketing and advertising that work across almost all kinds of human communication with influential intent.

Couple these techniques with those of logic fallacy and outright bullshit and viola - contemporary content and communication across the board.

Marketing isn't a science. it is a social science like sociology or economics. In its simplest form marketing is the process of determining what people want, getting it for them and then telling them you have it for them. Advertising is one of the forms of telling people you have it for them. The idea is to figure out what will motivate people and the chart above certainly includes some of the options. But the answer is always a guess based on some analysis.

Sometimes (often in my case) advertising can turn people off of a product or service. The one that gets me every time is things like "Order today and we will double your order by sending you a second one for FREE! Just pay an additional fee." Sometimes a technique backfires. I'm reminded of an attorney ad that hires a fast speaker to deliver a one minute message in 15 seconds. It would be more effective to slow it down to 30 seconds and buy half as many ads. I'm not sure how effective automobile ads are that sell a life style rather than a car. I'm not interested in buying a car because it might provide the same life style as the person in the ad. I'm interested in buying one that meets my needs and that I can afford.

Marketing is not a science. It is a form of human behavioral analysis like economics. It is the effectiveness of that analysis that determines the effectiveness of the ad. It is not as simple as being sure you include a dog or baby in the advertising.
