It isn’t the amount of people that will die from the virus per say, but instead the amount of suicides that will inevitably result from this lockdown. This will be the crisis no one talks about, because we are so concerned about those who will have COVID listed on their death certificate. Those who have spent decades building up their business, those who will never recover financially, who will lose their home, feel the world has taken everything away from them. This is the reality of a emerging mental health crisis that is the aftershock of this lockdown. In my view, death by suicide is more tragic than death by COVID.

The alarm needs to be pulled on this reality, but because of the societal taboo that comes with suicide, it will not receive the attention from the media or the government that it deserves.

RIP to those who have taken their lives since March. Your families are the ones people like Cuomo need to answer to.

I recently posted about this issue and I, too, am very concerned. I live very close to a senior housing complex and the residents are not doing well. They are mostly upset that staff closed all the common areas to prevent residents from congregating. Some are NOT taking it well at all.

I, personally, don't mind it and I was socially distancing before it was a "thing" but some of my extroverted neighbors (younger than seniors) are pacing the floors.

It's heart-breaking and I wonder what we can do to help support these people before they reach the point of committing suicide.

We are only now starting to see the long term lingering effect of the virus on those who survive. Motor skill loss, lasting liver and lung damage. There are going to be deaths that will be long in the making.
Will it outweigh those who might not have killed themselves only because of recent economic impacts? We won't know for years.
We have what happened in Brazil when they tried to ignore the virus - the impact was just stretched out over a longer time period and eventually they had to shut down parts of the economy anyway.

In the end, neither answer may be "better". The virus simply does not give a flying **** about the economy. It is what it is.
