I have been listening to the discussions and debates over the issue of gun violence in America, nearly all of my life. This week, I saw this OP ED by the Federal Judge who just sentenced Jared Lee Loughner (to several consecutive life terms), in the Gabby Giffords shooting incident. I'd say that he has things 'right'.
The Constitution calls for a "well-regulated" type of situation. As things are, they surely aren't balanced or regulated well enough. To continue in this fashion, will destroy America.
Yes...25,000 gun laws aren't NEARLY enough...we need many, many more... that criminals and the mentally defective won't follow.
Okay, first off. What concrete and useful steps do you want to take? You can't ban semi automatic actions, because every American gun owner owns a semi automatic weapon. So what is left? Banning cosmetic stuff like pistol grips and folding stocks? lmao Please tell how taking away the folding stock and pistol grip of my .22 rifle, makes your kids any safer. Please.
Ya I enjoyed reading what he had to say. Very thought out. No real solution though, other than "we must do something, so re-instate the assault weapon ban". I hate the idea that "one person sh*ts their pants, now we all have to wear diapers" society. I do not have any solutions but the mass shootings seem to be saying something about our society. We need to reach out more to each other making sure no one is alone. All need to feel loved and belonging to something. More discussion on the psychological health of society and less energy wasted on another regulation that will end up being a failure.
I would not make any of the claims above. What I would 'enforce', would indeed seem oppressive to some of the more looney gun-lovers. Something about what we're doing (with our laws and/or enforcement) is WAY TOO LAX. We need to reel it in. Let's get on with improving things in realistic ways.
Well, whether people like it or not... after the children being killed in that classroom, the issue will now remain front/center for many years. I'm happy about that.
Hmm. So you have no solution to the problem that doesn't violate the Constitution and civil rights but know "something" must be done. So in order to make yourself feel better you take away my pistol grips and folding stock and silly but fun aftermarket cosmetic accessories?
You don't have any actual solution either. I'm just one citizen throwing out my 'suggestions'. I'd be happy is my ideas/suggestions proved to be THE answer, but no... I don't expect that. However in actuality, the best solutions will come from many good ideas applied in the proper ways over time. I'm sure that you nor anyone else in this forum has THE answer (right now)... but I'm darned happy that Americans are even arguing about what those solutions might be.
