I watched the game Sunday night between the Cards and Cubs and I watched all four games on ESPN/ESPN2 on Monday. I felt the edge belonged to the pitching as there were a couple of pitcher's duels on ESPN in the middle of the day. All in all, I thought this was a very entertaining Opening Day and I think we're setting up for a thrilling season. What are your thoughts?
I am not much of a baseball fan anymore - maybe 'cause my Mets have been bad for so long - but I enjoyed watch the Yankees lose & the Mets win. Really the only reason I got to watch the games were because I was home sick. I usually watch the playoffs & such, but maybe I'll watch more this season & hopefully the Mets won't be as bad as they have been. Also, hopefully it'll be some different teams in the playoffs this year.
March Madness, MLB Opening Day, ahhh, the best time of the year. The edge usually goes to pitching early in the season (they say the bats catch up to the pitchers when the weather heats up and the ball travels better, but I think it has more to do with pitching arms starting to get tired by May.) It should be a good season but not for my Atlanta Braves. I hear they are freeing up cash to buy players for the time their new stadium opens in 2017. I'll be following them anyway on MLB Extra Innings.
Bartolo Colon as old has he is still looked quite sharp yesterday. The Mets have a good chance to finish second in the division and maybe challenge for a wild card spot. I don't think they'll overcome the Nationals (although if yesterday's game was any indication, Mets fans must have hope).
Go Tribe! Sports Illustrated picked Cleveland to win the World Series this year. Hope we don't suffer the SI jinx.
This can't help the pitching staff's this early in the season - or any time during the season. http://espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=350410110
I'm happy baseball is back. My Braves are picked to battle it out with the Phillies for last place in the east, but hope springs eternal. Do the Cubs really have a chance to make it to the World Series? Maybe. I grew up in the 1950's when baseball ruled the sports world. Things I do not like about today's game, the DH, it reminds me of woman's slow pitch softball. Interleague play, the wildcards, too many divisions. But I did grow up when only the best team in each league went to the world series, which was the case until 1969. Win or go home, I like that and I liked having the two best teams in baseball playing each other for the championship. Even after 1969 with 2 divisions, a team had to win its division, no mediocre team team getting a second chance. TV revenue is king today over the game in my opinion.\ I also remember when the all star game meant something. When only 25 players were chosen and each league played the game to win. When some of the starters played the whole game, one could see Mays, Aaron, Mantle, Killebrew, Williams, Musial play the whole game. Oh well, it is what it is.
My Tribe off to lousy start. Starting catcher Gomes injured in collision at home plate and lost for 2 months already with knee injury. Last night, one of their top starting pitchers Carrasco got beaned with a line drive back up the middle 2nd batter of game. Looks like he'll be OK. But injuries already, no bats yet, and a 2-5 start.
Why pitchers won't encase their noggins in something hard is beyond me. Maybe one of those Giancarlo Stanton things. Anything is better than a wool hat.
I'm pleased with the 5-3 start that my Cardinals have. They had a good game today against the Brew Crew, beating them 4-0. I think this Cardinals team should contend once again in October.
