Has anyone else noticed the propensity of TV networks--both broadcast networks and cable networks--to hire commentators for basketball games, instead of old-fashioned play-by-play announcers? In the past, the announcing of a game might have gone something like this: Nowadays, the announcing is apt to go more like this: These "commentators" seem to view the actual on-court action as a mere diversion; in fact, as an intrusion upon their trenchant, in-depth commentary. And turnovers are often not explained nowadays. Was it a traveling violation? A double dribble? An illegal screen? Or what, exactly?
I loved Bill Walton, basketball game, but as a commendtator, seem to me he's talking about everything but the game.
