We've all heard the rhetoric that fascism and nazism is on the right and communism is on the left. However if that's the case then why would Putin would want the complete opposite of him as a puppet asuming the whole rhetoric about Trump is true? Also why would the left have a problem with Russia puppeteering our leader? They wanted Bernie Sanders and he was a "democratic" socialist. My guess is fascism and communism isn't all that different from each other and the left in some twisted way realized that.
