The wall is designed to protect one aspect of illegal immigration. Others can follow. You can make the same argument that it's useless to try and stop people overstaying their visa because they'll walk across the border from Mexico. They must all be stopped, or at least deterred.

 

It's not 'robbing taxpayers' to defend the national borders. It's part of the government's responsibility.

Why not give dhs a budget for what they require to secure the border, and if they build a wall, it was needed.

Expenditures (at least if done responsibly) are typically done the other way around: find out what is needed and then determine the budget. And building the wall isn't a simple construction project. It would require massive land grabs along the border -- many, many imminent domain cases. They'd likely need to establish the necessity if they want to win those court cases, so again, they'd need to demonstrate the need before, not after.

 

Ok. I'm sure DHS has stats to support their desire for a wall.

 

It isn't likely that they do, at least not a proposal that would be cost effective.
