Every province also has a program for low income citizens to get prescriptions for a roughly $4 processing fee. ALL Canadians get this drug plan automatically when turning 65. All I had to do was bring my health card and the letter from the government welcoming me to the plan to my pharmacist and voila, now all my drugs cost $2.11 ( pharmacy competitive deal - go figger) per.

Sometimes. Canadians don't have easy access to U.S. courts. Hospitals take advantage of that by making fewer concessions.

I won't mention the hospital, but they thought my father was a Canadian because I listed by Canadian address where they could contact me. What they didn't know is that my U.S, address was a couple of miles away and that in a few weeks I would be living there.

They not only hit him with chargemaster rates, but they put all sorts of charges on his bill that he couldn't possibly have incurred. I recorded telephone conversations I had with them about the bill when I was in Canada, and when I was back to stay in a month I informed them I had legally taped and admissable confessions of outright fraud by hospital staff I was fully prepared to use in court. They negotiated quickly and they acted all hurt when they found out my father lived in the area (some miles away) and I was trying to knock down the bill to save on my father's portion.

My father and I have the same name and they got the admission forms screwed up, otherwise they might have charged a different rate.

Pure greed.

Drugs not covered by public plans in Canada (Imiquimod, for example) are available through some private plans or can be had out-of-pocket.

 

Oh yeah, the private plans are big sellers if you don't have employee bennies. And cash is always king.
