The threat of ISIS did not exist prior to the invasion of Iraq by George W Bush. But it is there now. To say that such a threat does not currently exist, does not mean that one should not consider what one would do if such a threat did appear. I'm sorry, but that is a poor argument.

I should probably add, so that I am not misunderstood. IF Trump was actually seriously considering using nuclear weapons against ISIS, then that is indeed stupid. And if that is the case, then that is too much. He really should not be president.

But I can't say for sure what the context of the discussion was. What I mean to convey is that I don't think it is necessarily stupid or crazy to have a robust discussion about under what circumstances it would be appropriate to use nuclear weapons.

That's what I mean to say.

Thank you for clarifying your position and yes, we agree in principle.

Indeed. But aside from Trump, what is also worrying is that the Russians are actually not having the same nuclear policy as the USSR had. Russia is much weaker than the USSR was, and in order to compensate for their conventional inferiority their new nuclear doctrine lowers the bar for when tactical nukes can be used, thus making escalation into armargeddon much more likely. look it up, it's very scary.

You may be right. But you're missing the point I was trying to make in that post, which is why should we take nuking ISIS off the table? I would prefer dealing with ISIS wackos who have no idea what we're willing to do to them, rather than telegraph in advance what we won't do. Because there is one thing we know for sure, and that is that ISIS will be doing whatever it can to kill as many westerners as possible.

But we aren't actually willing to do it and they know that. Keeping nukes on the table when we would never use them against terrorists only makes us look like idiots.
