I have seen a tweet saying it is no time for xenophobia, but no mention of the Covid travel restrictions in that post. And no tweet calling trump a xenophobe.

Travel "bans" (real bans) might have a small chance of working (like they did in a small island nation like New Zealand), or a bigger chance of gaining some time and delaying things (eventually the virus will find a way in).

Travel "restrictions" which is what this is (this is not a ban), won't work. When you carve out exceptions like citizens and permanent residents, obviously the virus doesn't discriminate between citizens and non-citizens, so, you may prevent some infected foreign citizens from coming in, but you won't prevent infected American citizens and infected U.S. Permanent Residents from coming in. So, you'd have to implement forced quarantine, law-enforcement-supervised. Given that the administration won't have any appetite for that, the restriction is toothless. Americans will come back home from these countries, will quarantine imperfectly, and will pass this variant on to others, guaranteed.

Besides, often when you detect a variant, it's been circulating already, for a while. So, chances are it's already here.

On the other hand, reports from Israel and from South Africa are anecdotally saying that the Omicron variant, although very infectious, seems to cause very mild disease.

Up to this point, more infectious variants of the SARS-CoV-2, unlike what happens with many other viruses, were not simultaneously becoming less lethal. If this one is less lethal, frankly it may end up being a good thing.

It seems like Omicron is causing a couple of days of muscle aches, even without any coughing, then people recover. If the virus mutates into a more infectious one but one that causes fewer problems for the host (which is an evolutionary survival strategy for the virus - if you kill your host, you die with the host), this may end up being the solution for this pandemic.

It is, however, still early. We don't know for sure if this Omicron is more infectious, less lethal, more resistant to vaccine-induced immunity and/or natural infection-induced immunity, etc. We shall see.

 

The only fools are people that think the name of the variant has ANY meaning whatsoever.. Do you get upset if an Atlantic hurricane is named after a distant family relative? Or isn't?
