President Joe Biden will announce Monday night that a strike over the weekend in Afghanistan killed top Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, two sources familiar with the matter told NBC News. A senior administration official said there were no civilian casualties in the counterterrorism operation that killed Zawahiri, who succeeded Osama bin Laden as the head of Al Qaeda in 2011.

Zawahiri's bumped his head on the ground for the last time it seems. Families of all the 9/11 victims should gather together and celebrate his descendence into hell.

Zawahiri was not only bin Laden's successor, but he bin Laden's #2 on 9/11/2001. He was intimately involved in the planning of the attacks.

We probably will not know the details..............and we probably should not. But Agree, it would be quite a "story" ...of good intelligence .....and even intrigue.

Guys like this are tracked using "Human Terrain Analysis". For example, when a known staff logistician for a bad guy is known, transmissions of THAT guy are monitored. The same goes for operations chiefs, subordinate commanders and so on. By analyzing who responds, how often and when, each member can be identified and located. Its just one of the tools used in SIGINT (Signals Intelligence).

I read a book recently that described the hunt for Pablo Escobar, the famous Colombian drug cartel leader who was finally killed in the 1990s.

The author wrote that when Pablo wasn’t using his phone, he would turn it off so he couldn’t be tracked. What he didn’t know was that the U.S. had aircraft overhead that could turn on his phone without alerting him. They could even listen to his conversations with people around him as he went about his day.
