UK City Council Removes Foster Parents From Conservative Parents

The term Orwellian is overused, but its hard to think of a more apt adjective: officials at a left-wing British council have removed three children from their foster parents because of the parents political affiliation and unsubstantiated allegations of racism against them.

Social workers from Rotherham council in Yorkshire, which is controlled by the Labour party, removed the three Eastern European children from the foster parents and from what was by all accounts a stable and loving home after learning that the couple were members of the right-of-center UK Independence Party, or UKIP. Among other policies, UKIP wants to tighten Britains notoriously lax immigration laws.

Council officials said the party was racist, and Joyce Thacker, the councils director of children and young peoples services, said she had to consider the cultural and ethnic needs of the children: a baby girl, and an older girl and boy. But the councils argument is a series of evasions based on a blatant lie. This is a clear case of left-wing officials abusing their power to persecute individuals for holding politically incorrect beliefs.

Race does not play anything like the role in British politics as it does in the U.S., and for the most part the British left has refrained from stooping as low as their American counterparts. But just as Democrats spent the last few years playing the race card to silence critics of President Obama, when it comes to immigration and Britains relationship with Europe, British leftists have for years used accusations of racism to smear their opponents and to discredit their arguments.

UKIP is not racist. As a brief visit to its website will confirm, the party campaigns not for an end to immigration, but for an overhaul of the system to end the wave of largely uncontrolled mass immigration thats transformed large areas of Britain in recent years. It would also like to see Britain leave the European Union, which in recent years has moved from a trading bloc to an increasingly centralized and unaccountable political entity.

Both positions are supported by majorities of the British people.

And both are fiercely opposed by the progressive, statist, bureaucratic liberal-left elite which controls swaths of British public life, and which invariably dominates the social services departments of councils such as Rotherham.

The couple appear to have unimpeachable credentials as foster parents. The husband works with disabled people and was a Royal Navy reservist for more than 30 years. His wife is a qualified nursery nurse. Theyve successfully fostered around a dozen children over a period of several years.

Its been reported that the boy has been separated from his sisters and placed with a different family. The couple also claim that the children have been placed with white British families, further evidence that the councils argument about their cultural and ethnic needs is a red herring.

Rotherham council has begun an inquiry into the case, and is under growing pressure to reverse the decision. Meanwhile, the row has handed UKIP a public relations coup, just days before a parliamentary by-election (special election in U.S. parlance) in Rotherham, which suggests UKIP may have had a hand in leaking the story.

For an idea of where America is headed, you only need to look at Europe who has all but abandoned liberal Western values. Hate speech laws, tight controls on media content, and now this? Why even the pretense of being a free nation anymore?

We are abandoning children in foster care

Since 2001, Soronen has worked to find adoptive families for each of the more than 134,000 waiting children in the U.S. and Canadian foster care systems. In 2012 in the United States, 23,439 children in foster care turned 18 and were "emancipated" or "aged out." In simple terms, most of them were put out into the world on their own without housing, financial assistance or emotional support. Take Adrian, now 27. After being placed into foster care at 6 because of his mother's drug and alcohol abuse, he stayed in care, moving from home to home, until he was 18 and too old for the system. He found the strength to try to put himself through college, using the county van his caseworker helped secure to move there.

His roommate got to go home on school breaks and had a mother who called to check in on him. Adrian had no one to call when he struggled at school -- nowhere to call home, no one to send a gift, no one to see how he was doing. He worked nearly 60 hours a week just to pay for college, and when eventually his grades slipped, he was kicked out. He struggled with the ups and downs of depression. As Adrian said of children in foster care: "We are not equipped to go through this world alone." In 2012, U.S. authorities received more than 3.3 million reports of abuse, representing about 6 million children, or 8% of the child population. From those reports, after investigation and intervention, about 400,000 children were placed in foster care, and of those, nearly 60,000 were permanently taken away from their families of origin.

This graphic illustrates the outcomes for many children who "age out" of foster care at 18 with little or no resources.

These are children who were neglected or abused by parents -- physically or sexually or both -- so egregiously that a judge permanently severed the parents' rights to claim the children as their own. Terminating, or legally ending, the right of parent to raise a child is not something a judge decides lightly. In fact, parents receive every legal, social and system opportunity to keep their families intact -- too often putting the child at risk of emotional or physical harm. Because we know that children thrive in families -- not institutions or transient, temporary care -- we made a promise to those children. We promised the day they were permanently separated from their families that we would find them new ones. A place to call home, to be loved, supported and cherished, as every child should.

We failed 23,439 children last year, and legally emancipated them from care. This world is not an easy place for children to grow and thrive on their own. Too often it is not even safe place. Make no mistake, many dedicated and skilled adults step forward to care for these children, as their social workers, counselors or temporary foster parents. Some even stay connected once a child leaves care. And some states have worked hard to extend foster care to 21, but resources for older youth are limited and difficult to access. A Health and Human Services report found that the federal Foster Care Independence program meant to help foster children make the transition to adulthood is inconsistent from state to state and provides too little for these troubled young people. And it simply is not a substitute for a family.
