Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman on television, speaks during a U.N. meeting to designate Wonder Woman as an "Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls"

Stand Up for the Empowerment of Women and Girls Everywhere - United Nations Sustainable Development

"On 21 October 2016, the character of Wonder Woman will be designated as Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls, in support of Sustainable Development Goal 5 – to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

The Wonder Woman campaign will highlight what we can collectively achieve if women and girls are empowered – along with examples of women and girls who have made and are making a difference every day by overcoming barriers and beating the odds to reach their goals.

The campaign is about women and girls everywhere, who are wonder women in their own right, and the men and boys who support their struggle for gender equality, bringing about positive change in their homes, workplace, communities, countries and the world together."

It seems that not everyone is too happy with this idea.

CBS News - Wonder Woman's role in U.N. campaign sparks outcry

The Petition Site - Reconsider the choice of Honorary Ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls

"The message the United Nations is sending to the world with this appointment is extremely disappointing. The bottom line appears to be that the United Nations was unable to find a real life woman that would be able to champion the rights of ALL women on the issue of gender equality and the fight for their empowerment. The United Nations has decided that Wonder Woman is the role model that women and girls all round the world should look up to.

Having strong (living, breathing) female role models is a critical aspect of the goal of empowerment of women and girls. If the United Nations would like a list of incredible extraordinary women that would formidably carry out this role, we could surely be able to come up with a list from which the Secretary-General could choose."

Well top of the list of incredible extraordinary women that the United Nations should choose is Condoleezza Rice as the United Nations Wonder Woman Ambassador, par excellence.

Better still, the United Nations should make Condi the next United Nations Secretary General, telling Guterres he is not needed for the top job after all.

UN's new Secy Gen Guterres $900 m reward to Assad for bombing out refugees

Condoleezza Rice is a war criminal. She was key in lying us into war with Iraq and every single one of our kids who came home in one of those bags is on her as much as Powell, Bush, etc..

No Condi is a war winner. Saddam was the war criminal and he was hanged for it - by Iraqis!

    Rubbish.

Nope. The President is Commander in Chief. The buck stopped with President Bush. Everyone else serves at the pleasure of the President.

I do know that Condi has enormous respect for all those in uniform who volunteer to serve to defend the country against its enemies like Saddam Hussein.

And by the way, Condi was very warmly received by serving soldiers on so many occasions that I think there seemed to be feeling of respect, love, like family, to Condi, a sister to a band of brothers, so to speak.

What's wrong with a fictional character? They are extremely powerful tokens for children. In fact, if you want a child's attention, the character had better be a cartoon...otherwise, they aren't going to listen. Who's an 8 year old going to be more influenced by, Wonder Woman or Angela Merkel?

So, with that logic well formed, there is nothing wrong with a fictional character being the ambassador. What I am much more deeply concerned about is the commercial interest this has. DC Comics gets a boon of free advertising for this...or did they sponsor the UN?
