Up Close And Personal With The Army’s Lethal New Sniper Rifle By JARED KELLER on October 12, 2017 T&P ON FACEBOOK Despite a brief period of ambiguity wrought by budget-jousting among lawmakers in Congress, the Army’s new and improved sniper rifle is alive and well. Heckler & Koch showed off its M110A1 7.62mm semi-automatic sniper rifle, selected for the Army’s Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System (CSASS) program on the floor of the Association of the U.S. Army’s annual conference and exposition in Washington this week, a first up-close-and-personal look at the lightweight rifle. The M1101A1 HK CSASS is a lightweight version of H&K’s G28E sniper rifle, one of which was also on display at the company’s AUSA spread. The company got to work after Army Contracting Command awarded the gun manufacturer a $44.5 million contract in 2016 for a version with a baffle-less OSS suppressor. http://taskandpurpose.com/csass-army-sniper-rifle/
Since the AR-10 wasn't good enough, re-engineering is the same thing. Why reinvent the wheel? The US already "liberated" enough German patents: "6 things the US stole from the Nazis during WWII" http://www.businessinsider.com/6-things-us-stole-from-germans-during-wwii-2015-5 EXCERPT "The Germans in World War II were at the forefront of industrialized warfare. They produced the first jet-powered bomber, developed the first tilt-rotor plane, and discovered fission. In most cases, Allied scientists and planners struggled to close the technological gaps exposed by German advances. When possible though, they just stole everything they could find and called it a day."CONTINUED
I may need to do a bit more looking around but isn't this rifle being used by squad designated marksman? I believe the actual snipers will continue to use the m82 and m24.
SDM's are usually 5.56. It's probably a true sniper rifle. I have no idea of why Ordnance persists with the 7.62.
Last I heard the Marine Corps was pulling old M14s out of boneyard and using them. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Designated_marksman I could still be wrong, but I believe this is going to be a squad level weapon which makes using a weapon similar to an m4 a smarter idea.
I haven't shot that round yet.... like to. I have all my dope memorized for my loads for my .300 SMK II BAR. Curious about the .338. BTW, I love the BAR, but I wouldn't class it as a sniper rifle, my AR upper for shooting the Grendel is far more accurate 400yd and under. I don't hunt much p any more, but when I did, the Browning served me well for hogs and up.
I do not see why he doubts you. I have built AR-15s from parts, before all the now available calibers, from surplus M-16A1 parts kits, the version with no F.A., it was lots of fun to assemble them, lots of trays with extra springs, detents, roll pins, easy to lose an extractor spring and better to grab another one from a parts tray and keep right on working. I loved the ease of working on ARs as opposed to the difficulty of pulling a barrel off a Mauser rifle.
I have not. I suspect it would be akin to handling an H&H Royal Deluxe in 500 Nitro. However, I'm still on the lookout for a "sleeper"' double, perhaps a boxlock Army/Navy. The trick I'm told is to buy in the UK and then import it here. Once they get to the US, the prices skyrocket.
